50"In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."=========================================
提纲:平衡观点
1 对于某些实用学科有积极作用
2但是如果对兼职工作太过投入会有负面作用
3对于某些抽象学科没有什么作用
The speaker asserts that it is necessary for all faculty at the college and university to take work relevant to their academic world in order to improve their quality of instruction. While I concede that in some fields outside work for college professors is appropriate and desirable, in other disciplines sometimes it nearly makes no sense to put such effort and emphasis.
I agree with the speaker in so far as proper devotion to outside work by faculty can have a positive effect on some academic areas. The advantages are obvious: professors, who are engaged in the research fields of practical disciplines such as computer and management science, by working outside, deposit their experience which might inspire them with new academic ideas that can be shared and discussed in the class. Moreover, faculty with abundant work experience are always tending to be welcomed(welcome), since in their class, they convert abstract theories into animated stories: while working what kind of accidents they have met, what theory helped them out, why this theory could be applied to solve this problem while that one(other) could not, and what(是不是该用which) aspect should be paid more attention to.(感觉冒号后面这一串句子好乱,要排比但是又不明显,而且主语是什么?) So impressed by the anecdotes experienced by their teachers as concrete examples(这句结构好奇怪, anecdotes as concrete examples?想表达什么?), students are more likely to understand, learn, and remember knowledge which seems recondite.
On the other hand, involvement(involving吧,个人觉得这个词和in都可以删掉) in excessive outside work might offset(s) the benefits it brings. Too much work off campus invites distraction in research work and instruction, the disadvantages of which are evident at(in) college and university. It might become a fact that, enticed by pecuniary benefits, some faculties will focus on their part time jobs off campus instead of their formal jobs, and therefore they do not have enough time to prepare their course or do their research. In fact, the purpose to improve the quality of instruction by taking job outside has become an excuse for satisfying their selfish desire. The deleterious consequences involve not merely their delinquency(delinquencies) but also negative effect on spirit and reputation of the college, which is difficult to establish but easy to destroy.
Moreover, emphasis on work experience has little place in other academic fields. Mathematics and physical science are purely based on reason and logical thinking; that is, the more researchers are devoted in such critical thinking, the more "work experience" they probably gain. And, unavailable to get job openings to speak of outside academia seem disciplines such as philosophy, which is the study of ultimate reality, causes, and principles underlying being and thinking of the whole world. Furthermore, public required(require) courses, such as English, politics, served to all students at colleges in China, merely call for faculty regardless of outside experience, since these courses only scratch the surface of disciplines that are served as majors.
In sum, aside from some academic disciplines,it is by working outside the academic world in professions that college and university could improve their quality of instruction, on the basis that every faculty should strike a balance between their formal work and work outside campus, and convert their potential desire into responsibility.
我觉得你该多注意一下句子的结构 : )
