Is it necessary for people to look back for an understanding of the past in order to live a better in the present? The author asserts that it's unnecessary since things are new and complex today. In my view, while I am partly agree with the author's assertion, however, in some circumstance, the understanding of the past can give us a better understanding on things that is complex and save us a lot of time.

To begin with, it is true that in many circumstance, things are truly different from that in the past so that the past understanding can help us little. Today's digital life is just a case in point. In the past, when a writer is writing a book, the steps may be that first he collects information which is related with this book, in this step, he should pay a visit to many famous people and places to get the accurate and valuable information. Secondly, he should write a draft in hundreds of bamboo slices. Thirdly he edits it and then, the "publishing company" will hire hundreds of people to copy this book with handwriting thus a book is published. However, with the development of information technology, it's no longer for us to take such a long time to write and publish a book. All you need to do is searching for information you need on the Internet, type your book in Word and then send a email to the publishing company. They will check and print it out, thus, a book is published. In this case, we can see that sometimes the present things are highly developed compared with the past, thus the past experience are no longer significant for the present, just like the past understanding of writing and publishing a book provides us no meaningful guidance in the present.

However, in science and politics, the past experience does give us a great many guidance and inspiration when we explore the future. Talk about this, a famous sentence from Newton flows in my head which says: If I have seen further, it's by standing on the shoulders of giants. This sentence best expresses the help Newton got from the past: he got lots of inspiration from experiment and theory of people in the past and attained a great achievement.

Moreover, in politics, the past history has a significant function in providing the present government with valuable real experience. For example, the recent political system in China is based on the past one in 1950s. Since Chairman Mao points out that communism is fitted in China, the later generations are exploring the the best way for China's development based on communism. Hence, we can see that the past understanding gives us lots of help in exploring the appropriate way for China as well as saving a lot of time.

All in all, from what has been discussed above, we can easily draw our conclusion that on one hand, in some fields which develops in a high pace, the significance past understanding is limited. On the other hand, in some other fields such as politics and science, the past experience has a lasting value which can give people guidance whenever they need.
