THE French government's long-awaited pension reform, which was announced on June 16th, turns out to be at once symbolically bold and yet ultimately disappointing.

The symbolism of this change is clear.

Finally, the government's forecasts are based on some fairly heroic assumptions about the French economy. One such is that the rate of unemployment, which is currently running at 10%, will by 2021 fall as low as 4.5%. Yet it has not reached that level since 1978. It could well be that equilibrium in the pension fund by 2018 turns out to be something of a mirage.

All the same, the government has timed the reform carefully to coincide with the approach of the annual long summer holidays. The hope is that this will keep protests to a minimum, although they could revive in the autumn.

For Mr Sarkozy, the pensions overhaul is the last big reform on his list ahead of the next presidential election, and a critical test of his ability to shake up old French habits and bring about change. With his popularity languishing near an all-time low, he may gain nothing from sticking firmly to his plans despite the howl of protests, but he has almost nothing to lose either.

[How Friendship Makes You More Successful      By Carlin Flora]

Back in college, my dorm-mate Sofia and I invented a ritual we called “Power Wednesdays.” Every week,
we headed to the campus fitness center for a workout, and then to the library for four hours of hard studying. We would stride back to our dorm with a huge feeling of accomplishment. But that uplifting cocktail of virtuousness, productivity and sore muscles — rewarding as it was — wasn’t what kept us repeating Power Wednesdays. Our real motivation was each other’s company.

I’ve been immersed in the study of friendship for the past several years, and among the many things I’ve learned, one idea stands out: If you truly want to change some aspect of your life, developing friendships with people who aspire to the same goals as you do — like I did with Sofia 15-plus years ago — can lead to more successful endeavors than embarking on solitary efforts.

Shortly after we make a decision to change our behavior, we often sense a softening of what at first felt like ironclad conviction. We chastise ourselves for our inability to summon motivation and return to the poor habits we’re trying to break to comfort us, actively undermining our goals. What a disheartening cycle. But research shows that having friends with the same goal can interrupt that cycle.

{chastise  [chas·tise || tʃæ'staɪz]  v. punish, discipline; criticize harshly}

{summon  [sum·mon || 'sʌmən]  v.  召唤, 号召, 召集}

The same type of scenario is at play with addiction recovery programs like Alcoholics Anonymous.

Friends can help you reinforce individual willpower.

The desire to be with, be like, and be liked by friends is primal. We’re all built to seek out strong bonds with friends
on whom our very survival might have once been dependent. While we don’t necessarily need friends to help hunt or fight off predators these days, most of us probably still feel like we can’t live without them. Tap into that deep-down social motivation and you’ll not only be primed for success, you’ll take pleasure in the proverbial journey.

Death comes to all of us in the end. There's no way of getting out of it. There may not be much choice in how it happens, but there are ways to avoid the most embarrassing and unnecessary deaths that plague modern civilization. Death from stupidity is an avoidable demise. A little common sense and a few good choices can ensure whatever the final performance entails, it will not end up in a late night comedy sketch or on the front of the local newspaper.

------------------------------------------------------------

Does Technology Makes Us Smarter or Dumber?

Ever since journalist Nicholas Carr posed a provocative question — “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” — in a widely-read 2008 Atlantic magazine article, we’ve been arguing about whether the new generation of digital devices is leading us to become smarter, or stupider, than we were before. Now psychologists and cognitive scientists are beginning to deliver their verdicts.

Calculators.

Cognitive scientists long ago identified the “generation effect” — the fact that we understand and remember answers that we generate ourselves better than those that are provided us (by a calculator, for instance).

Auto-complete.

Frequent users of smartphones quickly get used to the “auto-complete” function of their devices—the way they need only type a few letters and the phone fills in the rest. Maybe too used to it, in fact. This handy function seems to make adolescent users faster, but less accurate, when responding to a battery of cognitive tests, according to research published in 2009 in the journal Bioelectromagnetics.

Search engines.

The ready availability of search engines is changing the way we use our memories, reported psychologist Betsy Sparrow of Columbia University in a study published in Science last year. When people expect to have future access to information, Sparrow wrote, “they have lower rates of recall of the information itself and enhanced recall instead for where to access it.” It’s good to know where to find the information you need—but decades of cognitive science research shows that skills like critical thinking and problem-solving can be developed only in the context of factual knowledge. In other words, you’ve got to have knowledge stored in your head, not just in your computer.

Websites.

Way back in 2001, reading specialists Anne Cunningham and Keith Stanovich reported in the Journal of Direct Instruction that scores on a test of general knowledge were highest among people who read newspapers, magazines and books, and lowest among those who watched a lot of TV. Watching television, they noted, is “negatively associated with knowledge acquisition” — except when the TV watching involved public television, news, or documentary programs. Cunningham and Stanovich didn’t look at Internet use, but the same information divide exists online: high-quality, accurate information, and, well, fluff.

So does technology make us stupid, or smart? The answer is “both,” and the choice is up to us.

A fair amount of schadenfreude greeted the release last week of a study showing that the kids of parents who pay for college return their families’ largesse by achieving lower grades.

[schadenfreude n. Pleasure derived from the misfortunes of others. 幸灾乐祸

from German.  Schaden [damage损坏] Freude [joy]   ]

[largesse:  慷慨援助;施舍]

The study, conducted by University of California at Merced professor Laura Hamilton and published in the American Sociological Review, offered those of us who worked our way through college — or took out burdensome student loans — a rare opportunity to gloat.

[gloat: vi. To feel or express great, often malicious, pleasure or self-satisfaction 洋洋自得,幸灾乐祸
           n.  A feeling of great, often malicious, pleasure or self-satisfaction. 自我满足,得意扬扬,幸灾乐祸]

But our self-congratulation is mistaken, or at least beside the point.

Hamilton’s work, and that of other researchers, demonstrates that we should all be concerned about the state of higher education in the U.S. today and that college students enjoying a four-year paid vacation courtesy of their parents are merely a symptom of a larger problem.

[courtesy:  Polite behavior 谦恭有礼; 殷勤; 好意,纵容; 恩惠,好心 ]

The authors examined the results of tests taken at the beginning, middle and end of students’ undergraduate careers and concluded that 45% of students “did not demonstrate any significant improvement in learning” during their first two years of college, while 36% failed to demonstrate improved learning across all four years.

In particular, Arum and Roksa found, college students were not developing the critical thinking, analytic reasoning and other higher-level skills that are necessary to thrive in today’s knowledge-based economy and to lead our nation in a time of complex challenges and dynamic change.

Arum and Roksa placed the blame for students’ lack of learning on a watered-down college curriculum and lax undergraduate work ethic.

Although going to college is supposed to be a full-time job, the authors reported that students spent, on average, only 12 to 14 hours a week studying and that many were skating through their semesters without doing a significant amount of reading and writing.

Students who take more challenging classes and spend more time studying do learn more. But the priorities of many undergrads are with extracurricular clubs and activities, fraternities and sororities, practicing and playing sports, and partying and socializing — and let’s not forget sleeping.

The results are clear, wrote Arum and Roksa: “Educational practices associated with academic rigor improved student performance, while collegiate experiences associated with social engagement did not.”

These students need to build skills and knowledge during college if they are to use their degrees as a stepping-stone to middle-class mobility. But more-privileged students must not waste this opportunity either.

As recent graduates can attest, the job market isn’t kind to candidates who can’t demonstrate genuine competence, along with a well-honed willingness to work hard. Nor is the global economy forgiving of an American workforce with increasingly weak literacy, math and science abilities.

College graduates will still fare better than those with only a high school education, of course.

But a university degree unaccompanied by a gain in knowledge or skills is an empty achievement indeed.

For students (parentally funded or not) who have been coasting through college — and for American universities that have been demanding less work, offering more goodies and charging higher tuition — the party may soon be over.

------------------------------------------------------------

Here’s the thing about salumi, charcuterie and all the other forms of cured meats that we have come to know and love: they were always the province of experts. And there’s a reason they were the province of experts: they are hard to do well. Now every other restaurant has its own in-house cured-meat program, and the results are often nasty: leathery hams, moldy sausages, and industrial-strength lardo, just for starters.

{province:

A comprehensive area of knowledge, activity, or interest: 领域:知识、活动或兴趣包括的一个范围:

}

A recent trend has been the use, or rather overuse, of artificial smoke as a flavoring agent or even as a theatrical effect. Often it comes from acrid camphor pans or, worse still, from a postmodern instrument called the Smoking Gun.

It would be great if chefs could get real smoke flavor from these expedients, but they can’t. Creating actual smoke flavor means burning actual wood, which requires the kind of dirty, dangerous equipment that few restaurant kitchens can handle.

So various technologies have come into play involving the placement of a wood chip next to an electrical element – basically the same method used by pot vaporizers, which have sometimes been drafted for it.

I realize this may seem like a peevish quibble, but it bothers me nonetheless, because it is frequently used in conjunction with equally unnatural modes of cooking like sous vide. You take a piece of pork or duck, cook it for 10 hours in a tepid bath and then try to impose a sham smoke flavor at the last minute with another equally ludicrous tool.

{peevish  ['pee·vish || 'pɪːvɪʃ] adj. angry, annoyed; irritable, grumpy}
{quibble  [quib·ble || 'kwɪbl]  n.  遁辞, 双关话, 谬论;牵强之词   v.  推托, 说模棱两可的话, 诡辩; 吹毛求疵}

This is one trend that contains its own punishment, though: the smoke these things produce tastes like a blend of old cigarette butts and stripper perfume.

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.    [from:  Dune by Frank Herbert]

To love. To be loved. To never forget your own insignificance. To never get used to the unspeakable violence and the vulgar disparity of life around you. To seek joy in the saddest places. To pursue beauty to its lair. To never simplify what is complicated or complicate what is simple. To respect strength, never power. Above all, to watch. To try and understand. To never look away. And never, never to forget.

Love blurs your vision; but after it recedes, you can see more clearly than ever. It's like the tide going out, revealing whatever's been thrown away and sunk: broken bottles, old gloves, rusting pop cans, nibbled fishbodies, bones. This is the kind of thing you see if you sit in the darkness with open eyes, not knowing the future.

    Margaret Atwood

"Inspiration is for amateurs — the rest of us just show up and get to  work. And the belief that things will grow out of the activity itself  and that you will — through work — bump into other possibilities and  kick open other doors that you would never have dreamt of if you were  just sitting around looking for a great ‘art ida.’ And the belief that  process, in a sense, is liberating and that you don’t have to reinvent  the wheel every day. Today, you know what you’ll do, you could be doing  what you were doing yesterday, and tomorrow you are gonna do what you  did today, and at least for a certain period of time you can just  work. If you hang in there, you will get somewhere."
   Photorealist Chuck Close on inspiration...
