48.The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten.
The most essential events and trends were made possible by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten instead of the famous few. However, historians concentrate on individuals because these famous people have representativeness.
Historians place mainly emphasis on celebrities for the reason that they can represent significant events and trends. As we know, in important events and trends, there were persons who led, organized or be the most manifest, and they would probably be recorded in the history records.
famous individuals in the significant events and trends were the most manifest organizer or leaders who would probably be recorded in the history
It is easier for historians to know about their life which includes what they did and said, their background and their behaviors, also people's attitudes towards them can be known. For example, we know many things about Shakespeare, such as he left his hometown in his eighteen because he owed other people a lot of money, after he arrived at London, he work in a theatre from a choreman to a leading actor, later he wrote play books himself and so forth. So it is inevitably that most attention will be paid to these famous few.
There is no possibility for historians to study those groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten. First, the amount of work will be huge if historians study those groups of people. Since the number of people is considerably large, how can historians found all of their records, let alone study each of them. 没懂Second, there is no meaning to study each of them. The emphasis should be placed on what they had done. Events and trends which made possible by them are more essential than their names or behaviors. Another reason why they were not emphasized is that each of them can not represent any event or trend. For instance, all soldiers in the first and the second world war involved in these two significant events, can you imagine that if historians try to find out all their identities?
The famous few and those groups of people are equally important, but people emphasize the celebrities for many reasons. In history, the most significant events and trends would not happen without those groups of people who are the main part of those events and trends while the famous few are the representatives, so both of them are of the same importance. But it is more convenient for historians to study the celebrities in the history, and it is also easier for students to study history through knowing these famous few. We can easily remember the Civil War because of Abraham Lincoln, and we know the theory of relativity is published by Albert Einstein.
In sum, it is true that groups of people made the most significant events and trends in history possible while their identities are forgotten by the current people, instead, historians emphasized the famous few. But from the perspective of the study of history, we have to do that.
