Episode 167: May 2, 2007

The coming punch-drunk is not just a risk for professional boxers, there's a risk of brain damage for amateurs too, despite their use of head protection. As according to research being presented today at AmericanAcademy of Neurology Meeting in Boston, doctors from S hospital in Sweden perform spinal tabs onboxers within ten days(谢谢小楣) of a fight. They found that cerebral spinal fluid had four times level of protein called neurofilament light which is associated withnerve damage, compared with levels found in non-athletes(谢谢woodman). Some boxers who took more than 15 hits to their head in one bout had brain damage equivalent to that of minor stroke. Evenwearing headgear boxer's brain smack against the skull(谢谢小楣)with each blow, stretching blood vessels and damaging cells.

Some good news, though, the levels of markers for cell damage return to normal after a three-month hyita(没有听出来,根据谐音写的)from boxing. Doctor James Kelley, an brain injury expert in the University of Colorado said that there might be the hope for some recovery for partially injured cells.

Episode 168: May 3, 2007

If you like go online shopping, and you love a good scam, then we found a contest for you. Scientists in the University of Rhode Island are offering a thousand dollars to the person or persons who can most wildly manipulate a seller of online ratings. Many websites encourage consumers to rate them as they purchased. Shoppers are using this information to help decide what to buy.Unfortunately, such systems are easy play for shows looking to make certain products seem more attractive. For example, an unscrupulous author could get all his family and friends to give his book 5 stars. The Rhode Island researchers have worked up an algorithm for identifying such flawdge(没听到,写的谐音) in ratings. Now they are putting their program to the test, which is where the contest comes in. To participate, go to www.etanlab.com/rating, and download the data set, then start manipulating. The individuals who introduce the largest bias will take home the prize. And will show the scientists how they can make the flaw-busting(不确定) program even better. It’s fun for the whole family.I give it 4 thousands up. Oh, what a hack, 8 thousands up.

Episode 167: May 2, 2007
The coming punch drunk is not just a risk for professional boxers, there's a risk of brain damage for the amateurs too, despite they use head protection. As according to research being presented today the American Academy of Neurology Meeting in Boston, doctors from Sahlgrenska hospital in Sweden perform spinal tabs on boxers within ten days of a fight(太快了,没听清楚). They found that cerebral spinal fluid had four times level of protein called neuronfilament light which is associated with nerve damage, compared with levels found in non-athletes. Some boxers who took more than 15 hits to their head in one bout had brain damage equivalent to that of minor stroke. Even wearing headgear, boxer's brain smacked against the scowl with each blow, stretching blood vessels and damaging cells. Some good news, though, the levels of markers for cell damage return to normal after a three-month hiatus from boxing. Doctor James Kelley, a brain injury expert in the University of Colorado said that there might be the hope for some recovery for partially injured cells.
