I am pleased, on behalf of the Faculty of Engineering Committee on Graduate Admissions and Study, to offer you admission to
the Ph.D. program (Materials Engineering) in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at McMaster University for the
session beginning in September 2008. This offer is conditional upon the receipt of an official transcript confirming that your
Master's degree has been conferred with at least a B+ average. Your prospective supervisor is Dr. Anthony Petric. This is not a firm
offer of admission and you will not be allowed to register until the condition placed on your admission has been met.
We are pleased to inform you that you have been awarded a Graduate Scholarship of $1,000.00. We are offering you a Teaching
Assistantship (TA) involving 130 hours of work. The 2008/09 rate will be $38.00 per hour and therefore the Teaching Assistantship
is valued at $4,940.00. You will be pleased to learn that you have also been awarded a tuition bursary of $7,623.00 to assist in
covering the difference between fees for Canadian citizens/Permanent Residents and fees for Visa students. Your supervisor will
provide $16,050.00 to you in the form of a Research Scholarship. Thus your total income during the academic year (September 2008
through August 2009), prior to the deduction of tuition, taxes, medical insurance, etc. will be at an annual rate of no less than
$29,613.00. Please read the additional terms and conditions relating to this offer which are described in the attached "Notes for
Successful Applicants for Graduate Study".
We are pleased to guarantee you this level of teaching/research assistantship for years one through four (should you need four
years) of your doctoral program. Please note that the guarantee of ongoing employment as a teaching/research assistant is subject
to you maintaining satisfactory work performance. We are also pleased to guarantee you the level of Graduate/Research
Scholarship for years one through four on the condition that you apply each year for all major scholarships for which you are eligible
(eg. OGS, SSHRC, NSERC, CIHR). Please note that if you are successful in winning a major award (eg. OGS, SSHRC, NSERC, CIHR),
any Graduate Scholarship and/or Research Scholarship for the duration of the award is at the discretion of your program and you will
be provided with official correspondence reflecting the change in your financial support. If a half TA is not available, you will be
offered a Research Assistantship in lieu of a half Teaching Assistantship. For the 2007/08 academic year McMaster University
Regular Graduate Student Tuition Fees for Visa students for one year (September to August) were $12,525.00 plus incidental fees of
$499.28. Please note that fees for the 2008/09 academic year have not yet been set and therefore may increase. This offer needs to
be understood in the context of the expenses you will face here. A reasonable estimate of living expenses, in addition to tuition fees
and travel costs to and from McMaster, for a graduate student for a 12-month period is about $11,500 for a single person. Health
Insurance is mandatory for all Visa students and is provided through the University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP) at a current cost
of $756.00 for one person.
Please inform us of your acceptance or rejection of this offer by completing the on-line response form as soon as possible. If we
have not heard from you within four weeks of the date of this letter, we shall feel free to withdraw our offer and commit any financial
support to other successful applicants. We hope that you will decide to accept our offer, and we look forward to welcoming you to
Graduate Studies at McMaster University.
