问得好。我其实不后悔,因为已经有绿卡,不愁毕业出路问题。经济上自家的存款能够覆盖三年的法学院的开 ...

所以家境不殷实的还是抓紧找女律师要紧。。。

Biglaw Income (1st year):

Assumption:

You need to start a family. Then your spouse pays for your room and board every month! Even the internet service!

That's what I did and what I am doing.

Because I have a supporting, working spouse, I survived the law school without incurring any debt. Now all my paychecks go to the joint account.

Gym is paid for at work; iPhone plan paid for by the firm; pretax payment to cover public transportation monthly fees, etc.

In Chicago, the monthly unlimited Metra pass is $95. That actually is much cheaper than the monthly cost for riding a metro in D.C. For a single guy, one can find a roommate to cut the rental cost in half. That would be one area to cut cost.

If you want to save on the utility bills, shower after workout at the firm's gym! :) If you want to save the money spent on dry cleaning, wear the same shirt twice before sending it to the cleaner. :)

Finally, $15 per meal is too expensive. That would be another area anyone can cut some cost easily. (My firm pays for a boxed dinner and the taxi fare back to home if an employee works until after 7 pm). One of my co-workers works late EVERY working day!

oh i don't have any debt, just giving everybody a somewhat realistic estimation of cost of living in the states, surely you can always live a frugal life and save some $$, but I'd rather treat myself well and enjoy the city while i'm here, who knows where i'm gonna be in a few months.

and  it's a completely different story when your spouse provides for you, i don't think any chinese KJDs will have a working spouse in the US

oh i don't have any debt, just giving everybody a somewhat realistic estimation of cost of living  ...

I once lived in Chicago and worked in a law firm for about half a year. During the spring months, I ran to and from work most of the time (3 miles one way). The cost? One pair of Nike running shoes every two months! After two weeks of such morning/afternoon commutes, quite a few people started waving to me everyday while I was running near their shops! My co-workers saw me running on the street as well and later commented: "You are ripped!" That's my enjoyment of a city called Chicago!

Granted, you have to work out the logistics of putting business causal clothing at work during the weekend, cooling down yourself before changing clothes at work, and storing your sweaty running shorts, but it is definitely doable. That experience helped me to shape my body and run half-marathon later on. Living frugally does have extra benefits. :) Either spending money on the Metro fare and becoming a sardine every weekday or spending less money on the Nike shoes and having a better body. That's your call! Further, no need to buy a gym card if you run 6 miles four or five days a week.

Not every K-JDer from China has a deep enough pocket to live lavishly in the States. My point is that: Law school education is an expensive investment. Think wisely before committing the time and resources.

If your point is that the cost of attending law school is more expensive than what I have described, I am fine with that. :)

On the other hand, once you decide to pursue a JD degree, you may recover the cost of your investment by becoming an associate in BigLaw. You may recover quicker if you live frugally (again) with or without a supporting spouse!

Finally, I do know where I will be in a few weeks or in a few years.

I once lived in Chicago and worked in a law firm for about half a year. During the spring months ...

You definitely need a higher budget, everybody I know more or less spent more than what they had planned. I definitely blew mine.

There will be times when you just get tired of your routine, it could be your 11 pm bus ride home in a rainy night or maybe the 4th pizza lunch this week, or you simply wanna go nuts after submitting your CLR memo. These small things add up, and that's even before 3LoL and other fun stuff kick in.

I'm actually trying to bulk up so I need a gym membership, the firm subsidized one sucks, occasionally I use a PT to correct my forms, a huge portion of my budget goes to my diet, trying to hit 150g protein per day. I'm also in 2 soccer leagues because running bores me, and I might sign up a softball league for the summer. These all cost money but I think they are worth it, and it doesn't make you feel that guilty when you chunk 3 beers with your team afterwards.

Bar membership is territorial . . .

A U.S. JD degree may not mean much in Canada.
