Re: I want to waive my Estimated Computer Expenses both Summer Program
Summer Session is a condensed version of Foundation Studies, a year long course of Drawing (free-hand, not architectural); two Dimensional and Three Dimensional Design given to students in all majors, (Painting, Apparel, Photography, Sculpture, Industrial Design, etc.) Because RISD's Architecture Program is unique in being in an arts college, this common experience is seen as an asset. This is not a technique based series of coursework. Its emphasis is on developing how one sees and thinks and is geared towards the development of the visual mind. Faculties that Summer Session is intended to develop are abstraction, sensibility, material reasoning, material imagination, spatial cognition. Our pedagogy in the architecture department is operating off of this foundation. We speak to the creative process that it awakened. You would be alongside other students who have done the full year foundation coursework and others who majored in studio arts previously. If a prospective grad student has completed the equivalent coursework and has demonstrated ability in these areas, then the summer session is waived. If not, then it is a disservice to waive this arts foundation. Architectural design studios and Architectural drawing is not equivalent to the coursework covered in Foundation Studies or Summer Session.
I personally reviewed your portfolio and transcript and made the determination that you have not completed appropriate coursework in these areas and that the summer program would benefit you. There are plenty of graduate students past and present at risd who have undergraduate degrees in architecture and have gone through the summer program...so the idea that a degree in architecture exempts one from this coursework is mistaken. I will add that the students who have gone through this experience are glad that they did. It would be a dis-service not require it.
Unfortunately our fellowships funds are limited. You are among a select few who were offered the $11000 fellowship in addition to the $5000 assistantship. I am unable to offer any additional scholarship funds.
Please contact Dave Brown (dbrown@risd.edu) regarding the request to have the laptop requirement waived.
I am cc'ing Dave and the Dept. head.
Best,
Kyna Leski

Dear Kyna
I am writing this email to request waiving my estimated computer expenses and summer program(Summer Foundation Studies).
I already have a personal lap-top with very high quality, which was specifically purchased for very senior operations of AutoCAD, Sketchup, Rhino, Photoshop, V-Ray and any other kind of software for architecture design. Frankly, the estimated computer expense is not necessary for me and I strongly request waiving it.
Today I received the package from RISD to be notified of the Summer Foundation Studies from June 15th through July 24th. However, my Graduation Days are expected to be within June 30th and July 5th. Before that time, I am still an undergraduate student of Zhejiang University, my current univeristy. So it is not possible for me to attend this summer program.
Moreover, I would very much appreciate your answering some additional questions below.
Currently I am accepted by 7 architecture schools including RISD. Based on my currently offered scholarship, the school's academic strength and reputation, RISD is substantially under my consideration. However, since the estimated total cost of the first year is over 64,000$, even if I could waive my estimated computer expense both the summer program, there is still 53,000$ to go. Considering the scholarship RISD offered me of 11,000$ for tuition waiver and 5,000$ guaranteed assiatntship, as an international student, I still need to declare my financial ability for the rest 37,000$ in order to get an I-20. This is still a vermong RISD's peers.
So my question is, is there any chance or opportunity right now for me to apply for some additional scholarships or financial aid?
It would be very kind of you for answering me these questions that are quite critical for me.
Thank you very much for reviewing.
Best Regards, |
