A little freshman asked me how to improve his oral english,so I WROTE THIS ,JUST MY OWN OPINION。。。
Ways to Improve Your Oral English
Being an elder sister,it seems appropriate for me to help a little brother who always complains about his oral English.I don’t mean my oral English is so good as can be other’s instructor, there’s still much for me to improve.Just tell you all that I think maybe of some help to you.
1.You Need an English Environment
Needless to say the best way to study a foreign language is to go to the country the language is spoken in,because there you can get the atmosphere to use the language freely ,and gradually accustomed to it.Generally speaking Chinese is much more difficult to learn than English, and the reason just lies in what I’ve just mentioned------we have a Chinese environment for us to imitate,to learn,to use the Chinese language ever since childhood.Of course ,and unfortunately,it seems impossible for us to go abroad now just for language learning, then what can we do?
CREATE ONE BY YOURSELF!I don’t know whether you have such interest in doing so,but it has really been useful to me since I had a start of doing so.Before that I thought ,“my roommates may laugh at me,or just consider me as to show off!“However,in order to prepare for the oral examination of TEM 4,I was forced to take this measure as I really couldn’t set aside any time specially for oral English practice from my busy life! Thus I mostly used English in daily conversations, even when quarrelling with others=))).Maybe as a start you’ll feel a bit uneasy, but in fact you’ll soon get used to it,and after some day’s practice you’ll find unconsciously you can blurt out fluent English very easily, and no longer do you need to rack your brain to express your feeling in English. (To be frank ,sometimes I saw when you seemed to suffer a lot when you couldn’t make your ideas expressed---Just look at the sky painfully and then wink your eyes quickly, haha)
Always use English---just fantasize as you were performing for a movie as a famous star in Hollywood!
Except daily life, there’re also other places to practise.Internet ,for example.I like to use English to chat. For one thing,to improve my English;for another,my typing speed is better in English.Have a try,it does works:).
2. You Need to Use English Correctly
It sure is smart to speak fluent English very quickly and freely, but another important thing cannot be omitted:the accuracy,i.e.,to use English correctly. You’re perhaps not supposed to make yourself understood if you just keep on talking while mistakes are overflowing all over your speech. Two things are expected to be paid attention to:
1) Phonetics. You have already learnt this in the first semester .Think about how much can you still remember? And have you pronounced every phonetic symbol accurately and perfectly? If not, restudy it ,as it is the foundation to speak standard English.Remember, phonetics is to English what toft is to building.
2)To use out and out English.Slangs, idioms, certain oral English structures...all can add blaze to your speech. But remember,a wrong adornment is worse than none.So you really need to have a good command of them! You’re also required to make as less grammatical mistakes as possible.Though in daily life it is only necessary to make your ideas understood, but in some formal situations, such as the examinations, such mistakes really need to be avoided.
3.Enlarge Your Knowledge
To imporve your oral English is not merely a question of reading English every day.Knowledge of other aspects ,both in and out of the English area, are needed. Our perpose to speak English is to communicate with others,so you should have abundant materials for your exchange of views, and most basically, you should know what others are talking about!Listening is greatly linked with Oral English, esp. when SOMEBODY wants to be an INTERPRETER in the future:)Even if you can speak as perfect English as a native speaker do,but can’t understand others’ remarks,or you’re just completely ignorance of the topic under discussion, what use is your oral English? You have no tool to show it !
I think this is espacially important and useful when doing unprepared speeches.
TO SUM UP:
1.Use English as much as possible,whenever and wherever you are;
2.Since your listening is not good, you have to practise it.-------this is a concrete measure esp. for U.
3.Whenver you see Chinese, interpret as much as you can in your heart into English;do the same thing to the contrary.
4.Of course, read English every day,you can borrow some books ,or buy some tapes. If you have time, read the articles again and again until you can RECITE them.
... ... ...
And the most important ----Be persistent! 02-05-24 |
