TOPIC: ISSUE221  "The chief benefit of the study of history is to break down the illusion that people in one period of time are significantly different from people who lived at any other time in history."

People seem rather distinct in the ideas and ways of life in different periods. However, in fact, there exist certain relationships with people in each times, which we can get to know from the study of history, and these relationships benefit us in many ways.

People at various times are different such as their ways of learning, living and their values. In ancient time, people wrote in the bamboo chips, and until last century, people still use paper to take notes, while in modern, electrical documents are popular in the general life. Moreover, the social values are quite different in each age. In the old days, people considered the society was a unit, and all goods and property should be owed in common. However, in class society, the common idea were replaced by the class idea which divided people into different classes and unequal possession each grade occupied. Now, democracy and freedom deepen in the minds of people and class idea disappeared. Thus, it is considerable different from people in each era.

Nevertheless, indeed, though the changes of the different generations are obvious, human nature and the aspirations are the same. For instance, the democratic idea in modern time, could be dated from thousands
of years ago, in ancient Greece, the simple theory about humanitarianism was provided, and the humanistic spirits spread in the Renaissance. Not the preparations in the past, there is no the possibility of the democracy today. Moreover, human pursue the same aims in thousands years and will continue. In ancient Greece, people consider the fundamental philosophy, and in the middle ages, people were in the belief of god, and now, we do the science research. It seams no relationships of each study of the period, however, they are all try to find out the answers to the same questions, such as the meaning of existence, morality and ethic, and seek for stability and certainty. Even the flaws in human nature, revealed in various forms in different ages are unchanged. From the explorations of crusades to two Word Wars, these unjust wars were caused by the greed of human which includes desire of power and possession. Thus, human should find the similarities from the past to alarm themselves.

History represents the similarities of people in different eras, upon which depending, people can obtain a lot of precious experience and inspiration. Since to achieve the same aim, people today can continue research based on the achievements of predecessors, instead having to start it from the beginning. For examples, the developing countries which intend to make laws can learning from the Hamilton's constitution, and actually, many nations did so. Additionally, Newton said he just stand on shoulders of giants, meaning that his success lies on the accumulation of predecessors. Thus, it is more vital that people learn from the forefathers by discovering the similarities.

Thus, study history can help people to find the relationships with the predecessors, and the chief benefit is learning from the them, and using of their achievements, push the society and civilization advance.

People seem rather distinct in the ideas and ways of life in different periods.(根据你下面转折的意思，前面这句应该体现出：人们觉得不同时代的人之间没有联系，但是这句话的意思只是在说：人们似乎很清楚不同时代人们的想法和生活方式，那么我可以理解为人们的确很清楚不同点，但同时也知道联系，这样的话，后面的转折就有问题了） However, in fact, there exist certain relationships with people in each times, which we can get to know from the study of history, and these relationships benefit us in many ways.（这句话说不同era有联系，也就暗示作者同意的确是illusion；题目说的是illusion那么也就是说不同era有联系.这里作者同意了后半句的观点.但是没有体现出前半句：研究历史的主要益处就在于打破这种假象. 但是没有对紫色部分给出意见）

Now, democracy and freedom deepen in the minds of people and class idea disappeared. Thus, it is considerable different from people in each era.

作者的逻辑：1先承认有差别
               2 再指出有哪些不变
               3 指出如何利用这些不变或相似

但是没有谈到研究历史的chief benefit 是不是就只是打破这种illusion，或许照顾一下这一点会更全面（个人意见）
