153"Students should bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study. They should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively."
1 help them learn deeply and thoroughly
2 hone their ability in finding and solving problem
3 cost of time
Admittedly, skepticism costs a lot of time. But, as a crucial component of study, skepticism is an inalienable part of learning process. It helps people understand deeply and thoroughly and hone their abilities in finding and solving problems, which ultimately results in the development of our society.
The importance of skepticism to study has been emphasized for long. As Confucius, the greatest philosopher in China, has said, learning without thought is labor lost, and his “thought”, as I believed, equals to doubt. In the first step of learning, no matter in a formal one or by teaching ourselves, we are only receiving facts. Those facts or rather phenomena can be some observation of nature or some conclusions derived from those phenomena. In this step, we are far from learning true knowledge and if we stop here we are only wasting time. Knowledge, the essential thing we want to gain, is generally believed as the understanding of nature which can be used to change nature in turn. Facts and phenomena can only be regarded as experiences until our own thoughts get involved in the process of learning. As the process of learning continues, we seek the root of those phenomena, we doubt whether those deductions and conclusions are really sound and well grounded and we search for the usage of it. After such a complicated process, knowledge can be finally got and can be used to solve virtual problems in the future.
As skepticism in daily study is beneficial for making deep understanding, it also helps students, especially our youngsters, to develop their abilities. As the famous inventor Edison ever said, if you don't learn to think when you are young, you may never learn. Our abilities are ccumulated as we train them every day. Through continuous study which involves doubting our abilities of thinking can be accumulated and shaped and we become sharper and sharper to the flaws of some existed theories and norms, all of which contribute to the possibility of changing those fake laws. Can it make sense that Copernicus the famous astronomer had never taken a skeptical attitude in his daily study? Undoubtedly, the answer is no. Without those crucial everyday training, he could hardly find the truth that the Earth move around the Sun and
even if he found the truth he may dare not to challenge the extant theory because of his lack of confidence in his observation. Due to the skepticism of study, our great man can substitute those fake disciplines with well funded ones and accelerate the development of our society.
However, as mentioned at the beginning of the essay, skepticism, the double-edge sword, should be confined to a certain degree because of its costs. As our time and abilities are so limited, it is of little possibility for us to substantiate all the knowledge before we accept them. Obviously, we need not to prove if one plus one equals to two not only because it has been proved by someone else and accepted by all of us but also because the incapability of the beginners in proving it. As we are in an era of knowledge explosion, we don't have time to make sure of all the basic knowledge even in some certain area. Too much of doubt can only slow down our pace in keeping up with the development of our society and impede our progress.
To sum up, although skepticism as one indispensable part of learning is crucial to not only our students but also the whole society, there should be a restriction to confine it. As too much of one thing can only lead to the extreme which always seems harmful, to take full advantage of skepticism, we need to doubt the real advantage it can bring to us. |
