TOPIC: ISSUE50 - "In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."

I fundamentally agree that some teachers in college and university should spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach, especially in this era rapid social and technology change, but when it comes to the all faculty should do like this, we should be cautions about improving the quality of instruction depending on this method's utility and subjects' category.

Admittly, the faculty in some academics need to go out and working in professions relevant to the courses they teach in order to know which course's level is developing now, and how to combine the academics and actuality. Meanwhile, the teachers also maintain the most new informations so that they could adjust their teaching documents and change the important points according to actual state.

However, it is possible that there are some educators focus on their outside works, which can earn more money for themselves than the salary that is paid by college and university, while their outside works distract them from their courses, for instance, he would have no time to study course before teaching students because of time spending on outside work. If they do like this, it is no meaning to repuire them to spend time working outside the academic world in order to improve the quality of instruction, contrarily, decreasing the quality and level of insturction at college and university. The computer teacher at my university, take the best example, is do not serious about our computer courses and always give us much more time to play games on computer instead of teaching knowledges about computer and internet, when he go outside to work which is about painting and programing by computer.

In addition, it is better to go outside to work relevant to the courses they teach in the premise which these educators should do teach better courses than before. Meanwhile, there are some other ways to acquire informations about their academics outside world, such as, they can study couses and gain useful informations about their courses through reading news about their academics in internet, and they also can go outside to join meetings regarding their academics. Furthermore, some courses do not need to work outside, such as basic biomedical, mathematic, and basic physics and so on, which are should be repuired to spend more time on research in labrary not to outside the academic world.

In sum, some faculty do not be require to work outside because of their academics which need them to spend time on research in labrary, while other faculty could do work outside the academic world in professions if they can do promise their courses' quality which must be better than before.

Faculties’ work experience outside the academic world can benefit them a lot by improving their practical skills and connecting textbook knowledge with practice, thus their quality of teaching will be promoted.
Meanwhile, faculties’ time spent on working outside should be limited as they need concentrate on major work—teaching.
When we talk about faculties’ skills and knowledge, outside work experience benefits them in two aspects.
Firstly, faculties spent too much time studying and teaching textbook, which makes them rich in theoretical knowledge but to some extent poor in practical skills. A professor of economic may not finish some accounting and finance; a professor of mechanics may not fix some large-scale equipment; a professor of chemical may not fully understand how does a chemical product being produced—though I’m sure that all of them know the fundamental principles. That’s why they need work experience outside the academic—as they are rich in theoretical, they can easily understand the principle, technology and process in industry or practical fields. In the process that textbook knowledge and practical experience react with each other the faculties understanding and cognition can be largely improved. Thus, in their class they can taught the students something practical in addition to textbook knowledge, after all, most students will work in practical field after they graduate, practical skills can help them get on the right track of their careers more easily.
Secondly, in modern society, technologies progresses very rapidly especially in industry field as all investors know that advanced technology makes popular products. If faculties trapped themselves in academic world and ignore the latest development in their fields, what they taught their students may be outdated or even useless. Work outside can help faculties broad their horizon and grasp the mainstream of technology development. Actually many crucial inventions comes from industry fields, such as stream engine, they invention which brings the industrial revolution. I’m not denying the significant impact of theoretical knowledge—almost every great technology development comes from scientists’ efforts in the realm of theory—I just mean that college faculties also need to know the tendency and demand in practical field. By being taught these things, their students’ eyesight, inspiration and creativity can be improved at the same time thus they will become more competitive in job market.
However, we should not ignore another problem that out higher education system is facing: the shortage of outstanding faculties and small ratio of teachers and students. Working outside inevitably takes faculties a lot of time and energy, so I think the time faculties spent on outside work need to be limited in a reasonable range—I mean faculties can get necessary improve while their teaching won’t influenced.
To sum up, some practical work in reasonable time frame can benefit faculties a lot and thus their teaching quality can be  improved, how much time was appropriate should depend on the fields of the faculties and practice situations of their college.
