"Scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society. It is more important that they pursue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem."

Should scholars and researchers be also engaged in their own interests , no matter how unusual or idiosyncratic, while they research to make a contribution to society, as the speaker asserts? I tend to agree that the researchers should get conditional acceptance on pursuing their individual interests. They should start them with humanity moral and professional responsibility.

First of all, the ultimate aim of scientific research is to make contribution to human's welfare and society's development. So it is a standard to measure a researcher's value that how much he has contribute to human and society. To a inventor, his professional value is whether he invent any great inventions that bring people convenience. Darwin is widely respected because he helped people to understand human's history, which is no other than his profession.

However, you can never calculate a researcher's total value in this way. The development of science always makes progress step by step, generation by generation. The famous astronomer Kepler discovered three Kepler's laws after he studied some former scientists' research findings. Without these nameless former researchers, these laws would not exist at all. We should not ignore them.

But in the other hand, no one can predict which kind of research will make change the world. Some people's unusual interests which was regarded as useless may play a important rule in future. After Steve Jobs leaded Apple got a outstanding success in computer industry, his own interest on mobile terminal made him to get into the market of cell phone. Most of critics predicted that he would gain nothing but failure. Years later, iPhone came to the world. It is true as Jobs said :" It will redefine 'phone'!" Moreover, individual interest will increase researchers' motive. Thomas Edison loved to invent in his whole life, which made him became the most excellent inventor in American history.

What's more, individual interests would be used by researchers to endanger society.
When a researcher goes against the moral principle on behalf of his own interests, science will be his weapon to attack the world. Many evil scientists have been challenging the human ethics with study of human cloning. If it become into real one day, it will become a disaster to all the society and human. So with the sword of science and research in their hands, humans may benefit themselves, or hurt themselves.

In conclusion, researchers must pursue their individual interests with the thought of moral and responsibility anytime. Correct target leads to good ending. When researchers start to doing research to make contribution to the society and humankind, not to put them into danger, they will finally realize their value as researchers.
