题目:ISSUE153 - "Students should bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study. They should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively."

Indeed, it is beneficial for a student to question what they are taught for question enable them to understand the knowledge better. However, they should hold skepticism on the basis of good knowledge foundation without overused it.

As a matter of fact, no one can guarantee that what are taught to students today is completely right. Some unconcientious mistakes, such as printing errors have been made and sometimes even the teachers can hardly find them. In addition, the rapid development of society also enable the knowledge keep changing. Once people believed that the length of a ruler never change, the clock are always punctual. But the emergence of theory of revatility reversed our conceptions. The advancements of science continually refresh the knowledge and subsequently people’s minds. Thus, holding skepticism in what we learn make us follow the pace of development.

Skepticism is an attitude of doubt which brings questions into one’s minds and arises their interests in what are taught to them. It is skepticism that pushes students keep thinking and raise their eagerness for more knowledge. When questioning about something that been taught to them, students try their best to search for more information and evidence to solve the question. In this process, they learn not only the knowledge themselves but also build some criterias to judge whether their doubts are right or not. Students are not forced to learn but initiatively engage themselves in study and more important, enjoy it. Knowledge are assimilated through thinking actively rather than accepting passively.

Furthermore, skepticism is also a tool which promotes students’ creativity and enables them to exchange knowledge more efficiently. Encouraging skepticism is the way to inspire student to get rid of the frame imposed by the old knowledge and freed their minds. In addition, doubts has propelled students to express their ideas to their peers and teachers and discuss with them. Through the discussion, knowledge was exchanged and students thoughts were inspired.

However, this does not mean that students should doubt whatever they learn. The spirit of skepticism would be helpful only when we use it in an appropriate way. Only doubts based on certain knowledge or careful observation are useful. This can be aptly illustrted by the story of Keynes. For long, Adam Smith’s theory about the ‘invisible hand’ in the market, which automatically adjusts the market prices of commodities through equilibrilium of supply and demand, is prevallent in the 18th century. He believes that the government should not intervene the liberal economy. However, when the economic depression occurred, Keynes observed that the businessman pulled the milk into the Thames River while at the same time, many people were suffering starvation. Based on the observation, the Keynes doubted the Ada Smith’s theory about non-governing. He believed that at this situation, the freedom market had run out of control and the governments should implement the expansive fiscal and monetary policy to adjust the market to the right equilibrilium. This is the famous Keynes Theory which was proved to be right afterwards. Only after fully understanding the Adam Smith’s theory and careful observation of the market can the Keynes’ doubt turn to be meaningful and the spirit of skepticism works.

In sum, keeping the spirit of skepticism in mind can help us keep with the pace of advancements in society. With the skepticism, students are inspired to probe into what they question and to engage themselves into learning, which help them assimilate knowledge more actively. Also, students were benefited from the discussions with others. However, students should not doubt whatever they learn for skepticism helps only when it is used in an appropriate way.
