JOB DESCRIPTION
PhD Graduate Students-Vancouver Prostate Centre
Two PhD graduate student positions (Chem-and Bioinformatics) are available at the Vancouver Prostate Centre, working under the supervision of Dr. Artem Cherkasov, Associate Professor, Department of Urologic Sciences, University of British Columbia and Senior Scientist, VPC. To learn more about the Vancouver Prostate Centre please visit our website at www.prostatecentre.com.
The ideal candidates should have a strong background in bioinformatics, computational chemistry or related background and be familiar with protein structure prediction, protein interaction analysis, virtual screening and ligand-based modeling.
Familiarity with MD simulations and cheminformatics will be a plus. Previous experience with molecular modeling packages (Sybil, MOE, Glide, ICM, Gold) will be considered beneficial. Strong programming and database managing skills are desirable.
The work will be conducted in a world class multi-disciplinary group, in close collaboration with established experimental labs. Access to large-scale computing facilities and modern drug design packages will be provided.

Prostate cancer is a slowly progressing cancer which can be treated effectively if detection occurs in early stage. In recent years, there are several FDA approved drugs which are effective for late stage prostate cancer patients. I personally don't think this is a promising research area. More difficult types of cancer are, for example, pancreatic cancer (which killed Steve Jobs) and melanoma.
