Whether do corporations have a responsibility to promote the well-being of the societies and environments in which they operate or just make as much money as possible? This question seem like a 'either-or' choice, while in my view, these two goals can ba always achieved together by a well-operationed corporation.
Firstly, it is the nature of a corporation to make as much money as possible, only if the corporation operates within the regulation of laws.If a corporation cannot make profits which at least equal its opportunity costs, stockholders will quit, employees will change their jobs because of salaries cutted, quality of products or services cannot be ensured when managers cut the expenses, and consumers will not pay for it with the prices high up, all of which will end the life of that corporation. Therefore, only if a corporation makes its every effort to make money can it survive in the fiercely competitive market.
Beyond the goal of making money, corporations indeed owe a duty to serve society, especially the immediate community. Because the operation of the corporation surely influence the environment there and lives of natives. And a corporation as a positive organization in the society, sometimes strong and powerful, have a responsibility to feedback society, such as founding a fund for charity, etc. Moreover, such behaviors always serves the goal of the corporation. Getting along with the community facilite the operation of the corporation, such as using native resource, making kind of noise and such sort of matters which will not bring strong protest of natives. What's more, huge comtribution to the community and society can also help to raise the reputation for the corporation, which do good to increasing profit and its success.
Viewing from the opposite side, profit maximization within legal bounds is the most ethical behavior to some degrees for the following several respects.
High quality which ensure success of a corporation serves the quality and the convenience of people's lives. Corporation with high profits can also create more jobs and give more salaris to the employees which share a big responsibility of society, especially those big corporations like the General and Fort. Beyond these, maximizing profits enhances the wealth of a company's stakeholders, broads participation of individuals into market, expands the society's economy and raises the overall standard of living and quality of life.
However, the only goal of making money does sometimes have negative effects to the society when the system of laws is not all-rounded or the supervision can not operate effectively.
For example, without the effective protection of labors through laws, one of the bigest manufacturers in the world, Foxconn had the famous scandal in 2010, that 13 people suicide by jumping from high buildings bacause of the cruel and cold style of management in this company. There is another typical example which can strong exhibit the important roles of laws and supervision of related organization. Handreds of little kids even infants are heavily damaged because of poisonous milk powders which are produced by San Lu. And other milk products produced by many other companies are verified poisonous to some degrees. From the two lessons above, we can be safe to say that only regulated and conduceted effectively can corporations and the society can act on each other positively.
Thus, based on the analysis above, I basically agree that seeking profits as much as possible serves not only itself but also its employees, customers and the whole society. However such positive function needs a necessary
prerequisite, all-rounded system of laws and related organizations.
