issue 119 When old buildings stand on ground that modern planners feel could be better used for modern purposes, mdoern development should be given precedence over the preservation of historic buildings.

Any country that is undergoing the transition from a traditional society towards a modern city will encounter the dilemma between the urban development and the preservation of historic sites such as old buildings. In my point of view, I do not think every old building is worth being preserved. However, for those buildings that witnessed the most critical historical moments, we should give them precedence over the modern development and try our best to protect them.

To begin with, we are so easy to be lost in the tide of modernization. One among several landmarks that reminds us of where we come from and thus define us in human history is old building. When the urban landscape is change every minute, our memories of the past is also scooping out and thrown aside just like the mud excavated from the ground where old buildings once stood. The reason why we destroy old things and try every possibility to modernize our society lies in the purpose that we are going to live better. However, along with those old architecture in which our cherished memories of living in the city were crystallized and preserved disappearing, it is hard to say that we could be happier than before. Old buildings, to exaggerate a bit, is like a protection deity existing visibly in our society that changes so fast, and functions to connect us with the past that is leaving us in so daunting a speed.

Secondly, through taking certain measures, the mission to develop modernity could not contradict the task of preserving the old building. Take a look at Japan and Taiwan. These two cities epitomize the fascinating style that the oldest and newest are integrated into a whole in so strikingly a harmonious way. Old temples with rotten beams, old houses still live people of next generation, all of them array alongside the street where the most spectacular and expensive skyscrapers erect. They co-exist and seemingly match seamlessly with each other and interpret the beauty of each other right through the sharp contrast.

Thirdly, with the foregoing points been said, I do not advocate that we should unconditionally preserve every and each old building that already become precarious and useless. We should appraise their value first, for example, the historical value, the stylish value and etc. So the problem rests on that our city officials should have a complete knowledge of these old buildings they are going to demolish. For those decayed and shaky old buildings unable to be used any more, they should be replaced by new buildings.

All in all, "modern purposes" do not necessarily preclude the link with old things. Old buildings are the same. They sometimes offer more than any modern site could offer in terms of their association with people's sense of history, golden-age memory and thus their identity as citizen living in this place for a while. If modern development is doomed to destroy every architecture that living people cherish in their hearts, we should really stop and re-consider what on earth we are desiring.

多发几篇上来。
我个人的要求，一般对只上传一两次习作的作者不批改。

因为无法评估作者的全面水平：写作水平是次要的，重要的是恒心。

有恒心，写作水平是可以在练习--批改--反馈的互动过程中提高的。

点评下~
全文的整体思路是先谈了old buildings的意义，然后说可以通过更好的办法让古今建筑共存，最后危险无用的（percarious and useless）建筑可以选择拆除（前提是对此建筑很了解），思路清晰，论证流畅，用词有很多出彩的地方
段落衔接感觉to begin with secondly thirdly....过于单调，换成nevertheless however之类的承接比较好
