It is more important to locate money for immediate, existing social problems than to spend it on long term research that might help future generations.
Both existing problems and future threats deserve our attention. The author claims that the importance of existing social problems top the future threats, therefore government should spend more money in solving the problem in front of us instead of those in the future. The assertion, in my opinion, is way too absolute. Both existing problems and future threats deserve our attention. Balance is the key.
Long term research projects, though the benefit did not show in a short period of time but it will eventually benefit the future generation. Since entering industrial era, with urbanization and the population expanding in an extremely rapid speed, many serious problems have occurred. Environmental and energy problem are probably the biggest challenge that faces us. Nowadays, China’s economy is developing at high speed with an average GPD growth of 8% each year. However, there is always a price to pay. The rapid economy growth in China is based on the cheap labor, exploiting nature resources and polluting the environment. In order to solve the problem, recently Chinese government forward a project called “sustainable development” which invest a lot of money on the research for environmentally friendly materials, products and renewable energy. It has been five years since the project was forward, there are no major breakthroughs, according to the news, and still the government spent millions on the project nevertheless. Long term project takes time, we need to be patient, the results might be discouraging, but “somewhere along the road” we will find solutions, as long as we keep trying.
。
The investment in long term research is important, however, immediate existing social problems should not be neglected. During the economy crisis, the government should strengthen the macroeconomic regulation. During inflation, the government should stabilize the prices of goods. Immediate, existing social problems like poverty, crime, racial inequality, and unemployment also deserve our attention. If neglected, there might be serious consequence. In spring 2003, when SARS first appeared in mainland China, Chinese health officials did not raise enough concern of this contagious disease that spread though the respiratory system, causing it to spread at a fast rate in major cities, killing thousands of people and causing social panic. If the health officials have paid enough attention to the contagious disease at first, and apply quarantine to those affected the disease would never have kill so many lives and cause that much of social damage. When facing existing social problems, the government should act fast, delaying might cause serious irretrievable damage
Both investing in long term research and solving existing social problems should not be neglected. Balance is the key. Somehow, I believe that there is no clear line between long term and short term project in solving problems. Sometimes unexpected results in long term projects can help solve immediate problems, the same goes to short term project, and if done properly the problem will be solved once and for all.
