Issue115 "It is through the use of logic and of precise, careful measurement that we become aware of our progress. Without such tools, we have no reference points to indicate how far we have advanced or retreated."

The speaker suggests that it is through the use of logic and of precise measurement that we become aware of our progress. In terms of my personal experience and observation of life, I agree with the speaker and there are many examples supporting my view. In the following analysis, I would like to provide some important evidences to substantiate my standpoint.

In the first place, digital has connected with our lives today. In a society that changes as fast as ours, there are all kinds of numbers that are used by us to measure something. For example, in the universities or schools, teachers regard the scores of students as a standard to evaluate them; in the company the workers consider the salary a primary condition to decide whether they will accept the job opportunity. As the case shows, the measurement in all kinds of fields are necessary, and numbers become the significant way that people use for evaluation and measurement.

In addition, the main reason why I consider the author's opinion to be true is that mankind is aware of their progress through the careful measurement. It is not difficult to find that the measurement is very important to the development of human society. To see this reason clearly, a persuasive example is that in ancient times the horses are the primary tools for persons to travel, and the speed is very limited. Bur now, the buses or the trains are bitterly faster than the horses and it is just through the measurement of the speed of the two tools that people today realize the improvement of science and technology. Therefore, in order to move forward human cannot leave the measurement.

Moreover, to grasp the essence of my viewpoint, it is necessary to notice that logic analysis is another important way to evaluate progress. Because sometimes we do not know exactly whether we have made achievements if we only know the numbers. For example, as we all know, compared with primitive society, the crime rate has increased in the society today, however, we cannot conclude that our society is degrading. We have enough compelling evidences to prove that we have made remarkable progress since ancient times. The increasing crime rate is the byproducts of improvement in science and culture, and people are trying to solve this problem in modern society. Only by the logical analysis can we realize our progress.

In conclusion, due to analysis and reasons mentioned above, which sometimes correlate with each other to form an organic whole and thus become more convincing than any one of them, we may safely arrive at the conclusion that the logical analysis and precise measurement are vital to the development of mankind because without them people have no reference points to indicates how far they have advanced or retreated.
