Issue179 (675 words) 有一点超时-2004.3.9
------题目------
What most human beings really want to attain is not knowledge, but certainty. Gaining real knowledge requires taking risks and keeping the mind open—but most people prefer to be reassured rather than to learn the complex and often unsettling truth about anything.
------正文------
It is true that ordinary people are intended to attain certainty. However, if people want to gain real and meaningful knowledge, they must have the courage to take risks and keep mind open.
The procedure of gaining truth is complicated and hard. Looking back to the human history, every step forward in the exploiting of the real knowledge equaled with people's especially scientists' hard working and continuous efforts. Real knowledge includes many contents, such as the basis principles, solid standards and some special characteristics , that is to say, the results alone are meaningless sand attaining them does not equal with attaining real knowledge. So if some people only to gain certainty, they will find that they master nothing in fact. And when facing up to new situations, they may feel confused for they do not understand the principles of the knowledge and do not know how to suit for the new trend and changes in the field .
Of course, people must admit that in daily life, people do have the trend to attain certainty rather than real knowledge. The reasons are various. First, sometimes there are no necessity for ordinary people to master those complicated and professional knowledge that may be useless for them. What they need to know is just how to put this knowledge into practical use. Foe example, nowadays almost everyone know how to use computer and surf the Internet, but there are relatively less people who can clearly speak out the working principles of the CPU and much less people can compile computer programme by themselves. As far as the common people are concerned, knowing some basis knowledge are enough and there is no need to go further in the road of exploiting the real knowledge, which is the task of the specialists and scientists. In addition, not everyone has the potential and capacity to master and understand the real konwledge and they can only afford attaining certainty. People should not forget another reason for this trend is that the mistaken direction of the education system. In school, teachers only emphasize that whether the students can remerber those solid knowledge and results, and do not care more about whether the students can master the ability to attain real knowledge by themselves. Therefore, students will be satisfied with the certainty.
However, given the fact mentioned above, people who want to attain real knowledge must have the courage to take risks and keep mind open. Because in the way of exploiting truth, every possibility as well as failures and dangers may take place. If people have no such outstanding characteristics, they will give up on the half of the road. The famous German poet Goethe once said that: " Man errs so long ad he strives. " In the human history, people can find out many precedents that famous scientist had tried again and again to achieve the final accomplishment. Therefore, people should prepare to be courageous to take risks to attain real knowledge. in addition, an open mind is also crucial. For example, in the procedure of finding of the structure of the DNA, many world famous scientists were making their best to succeed. However, at that time, the helix stuture of protein had been proved and many scientists thought that the structure of DNA had no possibility to have the same structure with protein. But two young scientists - Watson and Click did not think so. They argued that the helix structure was a very steady form in the bodies of biology, so DNA might also adopt such structure. Then with the rare imagination and open mind, they were finally rewarded the Nobel prize for their outstanding contribution of finding out the double-helix structure of DNA. And those conventional scientists lost the chance for ever.
All in all, in the modern society, in order to attain meaningful knowledge, people should not be satisfied with the solid certainty alone and they should break through self limits to exploit the essence of problems, which can help them attain the real knowledge. |
