41"Such non mainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits play a vital role in society by satisfying human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science."
In the era of more civilized and progressed society, non mainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling and psychic, paranormal pursuits, seem to be of little use, because we human beings have already improved a lot in the mainstream science. In my point of view, however, I still believe before mainstream can answer all the questions we encounter, non mainstream areas will continue play an important role in our society.
Generally speaking, we usually entertain ourselves by enjoying the novels or fictional movies, and thus the non mainstream areas can work as entertainment to satisfy human's needs. In fact, lots of stories, movies about fortune-telling, fate, witchcrafts etc, come about to meet the curiosities of human beings. People tend to be fascinated with such non mainstream areas in that they bring about people's interests, dreams into reality, even through books or screens. A good case is Harry Potter, a gripping and electrifying fiction novel, full of suspense, secrets, and of course magic. It is just because of the witchcraft and wizardry that attract both children and adults to enjoy the mysterious world created by J.K Rowling. We all live in realistic world, therefore, we need curiosity, inspiration, encouragement and more space to dream about from the unrealistic world. Without the enjoyment from the non mainstream areas, our lives would become dull and lack of mysterious interests.
In addition, besides the function of entertainment, non mainstream areas still play an vital role in explaining phenomena which cannot elucidated by mainstream science. Before the time when medicine had come into being, our ancestors cannot understand why people get ill, and also why people going to die at last. In the absence of basic knowledge of ailment, it is natural for them to seek help from fate-telling necromancer to explain the cause that people's illness and death are due to the obsession of a ghost. Not only do people from the past time turn to non mainstream areas for help, but, people today, also explain(interpret) something that cannot explained by science in an fortune-telling way. For example, when two lovers telling about their love story, the most frequent words are the "magic" and "serendipity". It seems that they are doomed to meet each other and fall in love because all of these have already been determined by fate. Thus we could conclude that non mainstream areas sometimes could satisfy people's curiosity about the unknown world.
However, when non mainstream meet against science, people will feel confused, and moreover, non mainstream areas, if over emphasized, would prevent people from actively struggling against fate, or making efforts for futures. Opening the history books of our human beings, lots of famous and successful people achieved their dreams because they firstly had no devotion to superstitious fate, and most importantly, they held strong belief that they were able to overcome the difficulties. For example, Roosevelt, overcame polios, and became one of the best Presidents in American history. Another example is Forrest Gump, his honesty, strong will to hold his conviction and optimistic attitudes towards life are always move me and encourage me to face the difficulties and overcome troubles rather than passively accept what God gave me. We should master and control our own lives in that we are human beings, not servants to fate.
To sum up, while it is true that non mainstream plays an important role in both entertaining and explaining unknown areas, we should also realize that the non mainstreaming such as fortune-telling, astrology are not panaceas--they have their limitation. Most importantly, however, is that we human beings should master our own fate. |
