TOPIC: ISSUE235 - "Most people are taught that loyalty is a virtue. But loyalty-whether to one's friends, to one's school or place of employment, or to any institution-is all too often a destructive rather than a positive force."

Loyalty is a basic virtue that we are taught to hold up to ever since childhood. It represents some essential natures in human, like love, sympathy, devotion and dedication. In most cases loyalty is a positive motivating force in our lives, but sometimes undue loyalty to one’s friends and institution are regarded as foolish and can be destructive to people. Hence, we must base loyalty on moral standards and wise judgment.
看了北美范文后,长叹一声,觉得应该没有人能写出那个范围了
绝大多数习作MS也是对范文的immitation
Sigh……
In the first place, loyalty to one's friends and spouse is the basic requirement to keep friendship and love, which are the top important emotional needs of human. Ancient Chinese worriers, for example, regarded the loyalty to their friends as the cornerstone on which they built their reputation. Their loyalty is exalted in many classical novels such as the famous “The Romance of the Three Kingdoms”. Anyone who betrayed or cheated on his or her friends and lovers would not only lose their trust and love, but also respect of the society. Worse still, they have to bear the cross of disloyalty for the remaining life. Infidelity, for example, is contemned as immoral in most societies.
Furthermore, loyalty to one's employment, pursuit and institutions is kind of basic professional ethics. Journalists must be loyal to the facts; businessmen must be loyal to business secrets; and politicians must be loyalty to their electorates. Without these anticipated loyalties, the labor market and the society would relapse into chaos. Besides, loyalty ensures devotion thus motivates people to be persistent and attain significant achievements. Most great masters in arts and scientists are faithful pursuer of their interests.
Moreover, loyalty to one's country and the population is the utmost moral requirement and the proof of one's value, especially in affairs concerning national security. “Science has no boundary, but scientists have.” After arduous efforts, Qian Xuesen, the father of A-bomb in China, returned to his destitute motherland in 1955 when China was threatened by the super powers in the world. His courage and loyalty motivated generations of Chinese students abroad to come back to China and make great contributions.
However, unconditional loyalty based on total obedience without any skepticism is indeed deleterious. Loyalty does not mean blind subjection or protection. We cannot shelter a friend or lover who committed crime from legal responsibility just because we stay loyalty to them—on the contrary, sheltering them would be disloyalty and irresponsible for their own sake. We cannot work for an institution or conform to a leader that is meant for destruction or evil. It is even more important for us to abandon and reject such insanity. Take the Nazis for instance. They were fanatically loyalty to their violent leader Hitler who was obsessed in racial deracination and invasions. The misguided loyalty was used against the human race and led to the tragedy of World War two. When a country is ruled by tyrants, it is understandable for people to abjure their loyalty, like Einstein left irrational Germany for America where he could continue his pursuit for science. In conclusion, people must judge whether their loyalty to friends or institutions is rational and justifiable. If undue loyalty is destructive, maybe it is more morally loyal to abandon such loyalty. |
