------题目------
History teaches us only one thing: knowing about the past cannot help people to make important decisions today.
------正文------
Although today is so different from the past, especially considering the trend of globalization and rampant pace of technological development, history study does afford us an insight into the present complications or social illness. Furthermore, by claiming history is of little relevance with today important decisions, the speaker reveals his or her superficial notion both about the definition of history and the real process, in which we human beings advance as a whole.

Admittedly, history study is far from panacea for our society. This point is especially evident in the trend of globalization and the unprecedented advancement in technology. To begin with, the globalization definitely poses certain news challenges to human beings--such as global financial crisis and multicultural communication--have never been encountered by our ancestors anyway, and we can gain little from the their experiences as a result. Moreover, we are experiencing the unprecedentedly rapid advancement in technology, which seems to be likely to slip out of human control for first time in our history. Consider the development of nuclear technology as an example. Human beings have never mastered a technology carrying the risk that can put us as a species on the verge of extinction, due to the threat from a nuclear war. In all the cases, since the trend of globalization and rampant development in technology are so different from any experience of an earlier age in history, the history studying indeed cannot afford us any direct answers about how to cope with such complications.

However, by claiming that knowing about the past cannot help people to make important decisions today, the author tends to underestimate the relevance of history study. In fact, referring to the past actually provide an insight to the challenges today through a indirect but meaningful way, despite the fact that today is so different from past. Consider the example of globalization again. Few of us will deny the cultural impact on a nation or a people in the increasing interaction with other cultures. And it seems that we cannot look for any direct solution to prevent the cultural shock or xenophobia from our predecessor, who do not possess any relevant experience after all. But we can still gain an insight to the new complication through the history study about the amalgamation among different peoples ever happened.

In the root of certain persist problems facing human beings, lies another reason why I take exception to the speaker's claim. Since certain foibles in human nature--such as aggression and greed--are still unchanged despite the development of the world around us, they will certainly incur the same problems that plague us in history. As a result, history study not only offers us the answer about the culprit of certain social ills but also afford us a more clear understanding about ourselves. For illustrating example about the relevance, one needs look no further the peace constitution of Japan or the annual commemorations of the World War II, which are the lesson that we gain from past and prevent us from devolving our society into a fascistic one. Acknowledging the existence of such aggression in human nature, it is wise for us to pay enough attention to the resurgence of highly conservative political forces today. Similarly, without the greed rooted in human nature, we would have eliminated such social illnesses—such as poverty and homelessness for a long time.

Another two problems with the speaker's assertion have something to do with the definition of history and its process. In fact, all the things that happened before and cannot be erased can be called as history. In other words, too often, history is still not far from our daily life—that is to say, the condition often do not change so dramatically between the past and today. We can call 911 as history, and we also must be aware of the threat from terrorism in present. In this case, if we fully accept the claim by the speaker, it seems not necessary for us to study the root of terrorism and to eradiate that as the ultimate purpose. Moreover, in the process of globalization, not all the nations hold the same pace. As a result, the history of developed nations can be utilized to provide strategies for developing ones, as demonstrated in the change of trade policy. Any observant individual will come to the truth that many Asian countries are emulating the export-orientated policy ever adopted by Japan in history.

In final analysis, to truly understand the relevance of history study, it is necessary to clarify the definition of history, and view the process of history as an inhomogeneous one, in which nations can gain certain insight from each others. After all, it is primarily by analysizing the experience of our predecessors that we get any advancement today.
