Issue185 scandals-whether in politics, academia, or other areas—can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could.

The disclosure of scandals concerning social celebrities, primarily through media reports, serves to enhance the effectiveness of social supervision. However, undue emphasis on the usefulness of the revealing and promulgation of scandals will also bring some side effects. As for me, we should pay proper attention to the disclosure of scandals in any arenas, but we should not carry it too far.

Although our government shoulder the major responsibility of social supervision, it is highly possibly some aspects of treacherous behaviours undergo unnoticed, therefore, proper disclosure of scandals is necessary. Scandals mainly embrace the conducts concerning the violation of laws, the encroachment on moral values, which are driven by personal interests and seldom carried out publicly. Therefore, proper disclosure of these often ignorant disgraceful behaviours not only complements the omitted aspects in governmental supervision, but also set caveats for the public. Furthermore, the closure of scandals will usher in the reform and correction of the past mistakes. Apt illustrations can be found in almost all the realms. The United Nations secretary general Kofi Anna was criticized for his mismanagement over the programme of oil for food, and secured a Swiss company the contract under this programme, meanwhile, the UN peace-keeping soldiers are challenged for sexual abuse of Congo children. All these scandals serve to caution his subordinate and result in the consequent reforms on UN. Similarly, scandal in the realm of scientific inquiry often appears in the form of plagiarism and counterfeit, the southern Korean top scientist Hwang Yoo suk was found conjuring up experimental data in his cultivation of the human embryonic stem cell, which serious undermined his claimed success of therapeutic human cloning. Hwang Yoo suk’s fall from lofty perches to the skeptic criticism serve as the caveat for other scientists that such immoral behaviours will be doomed to fail. Another fitting example can be find in the field of arts, American’s bestselling singer Michael Jackson was arrested for molestation of children, extorting, and false imprisonment, although his charges were finally acquitted,. His career inextricably went into a decline. His scandals reminded his counterparts that the level of moral values is as important as creative genius. As a consequence, the scandal do exert an beneficial influence own social supervision and provide lessons for other people to avoid making same blunders.
However, over emphasis on the disclosure of scandals will bring about some adverse effects. Over emphasis on the revealing of scandals will stray from the its positive function of social supervision and degenerate into a means to pander some low-grade curiosity among the public. For instance, the revealing of the love affairs between a married female pop star and a male singer, even through it is against moral, such reports has transgress people’s private rights. Furthermore, it is serve no purpose in public supervision. Furthermore, undue attention on the trivial scandals will distract people from more important social and moral issues in urgent need of solution, such as poverty, hunger, discrimination and so on. In addition, undue emphasis on the media’s function to spot social problems in the exposure of scandals might as well create an illusion that social justice department is useless. Instead, social justice department assume the major responsibilities of government supervision, the media only play a complementary role. Therefore, we should not over emphasis the usefulness of revealing of scandals lest the happening of aforementioned phenomena.

All in all, the revealing of scandals does play an important role in social supervision and direction of rightful social and moral values. However, over-emphasis will not only undermine its such functions but also elicit some detrimental results.
