17 - "There are two types of laws: just and unjust. Every individual in a society has a responsibility to obey just laws and, even more importantly, to disobey and resist unjust laws."

What ensure a well-ordered society? Of course, laws. The speaker asserts that as a member of a society, everyone should obey just laws and also disobey and resist unjust laws. I fundamentally agree with this opinion. What's more, a effective and democratic law should be amended along with the development of society.
Law serves to govern a society and to control the behavior of its members, making a society run in order. Laws are always settled to be just to whole man kind based on a overall view. With out the control of laws, the society may be trapped in chaos unorderly and stagnantly. For example, the law in Canada states that people must drive their cars on the right-hand side of a two-way street. If people were allowed to choose at either side of the street to drive on, driving would be dangerous and traffic would be in a jam, which may probably threaten the human life. Moreover, just law is designed to protect basic rights and freedoms and to treat everyone fairly. The law also serves to ensure that strong groups and individuals do not use their powerful positions in society to take unfair advantage of weaker individuals. We can see that just laws make our society run in a good condition, which we all should obey.
However, sometimes, laws of non justice also exist to threaten the rights of common populace and the sound development of a society. At that time, people should give a strong feedback of disobedience and opponency. Laws are always designed by a certain government. Some governors abuse their power to put unfair pressure on people and rule the society tyrannically. Consider the Hitler and his government for example. Hitler used his power to enact unjust laws-not in the person of the common populace’s rights- to rule his country and brought a huge disaster to the people in Poland as a result. Facing with such kinds of unjust laws, it is the very responsibility to fight back bravely for that those laws have lost their essential meaning, which ought to be designed protect the rights of the most.
Actually, despite the best intentions, laws are sometimes created that people later recognize as being unjust or unfair. In a democratic society, laws are not carved in stone, but must reflect the changing needs of society. Take the United States for example. 1784 the first Constitution was born, instead of being fixed, ten amendments were added to the Constitution to ensure human right in 1791. Until now, there has been twenty-seven amendments, much more words than the initial Constitution. Only under such a developing legislation system, a well-run society like America can in long-lasting stability and flourish. The instance is sufficient to illustrate that a just, rational and democratic law should be developed along with the development of the society.
To sum up, every member should consciously obey the laws which are view as a yardstick of justice. But when comes to some unjust laws, it our duty to disobey and resist them. In a real democratic society, laws should be amended to reflect the changing needs of society which could be a real just one. |
