TOPIC: ISSUE136 - "The absence of choice is a circumstance that is very, very rare."
WORDS: 577        TIME: 限时失败         DATE: 2007-8-13

People sometimes feel that they have no choice, maybe because the choices are not appealing or self-defeating, but the absence of choice is a circumstance that is very rare.

There are many choices in everyday life: choose what kind of breakfast to have, choose what lectures to have, choose what movie to watch. Usually, people find it difficult to make a choice because the choices available are all very good or the details of the choices are very complicated, so they are not sure whether they will make the best decision. For instance, when one has to decide the future vocation, there are many choices, but he has to consider his interest, the need of the society and other factors as well. Moreover, the choices of others may also influence the one who is to make a choice, because it seems easier for one to follow others’. However, the choice suitable for others may not be suitable for themselves. Although there are plenty of choices, s/he may find it difficult to choose from them. Therefore, in most circumstances, people are troubled with what they should choose instead of no choice.

However, I concede that sometimes people may think they have no choice, but  the real fact is that the choices available are all unappealing, and they do not want to choose any of them. A famous moral dilemma can serve as a persuasive example. A man who want to save the life of his beloved wife has to steal the medicine from the doctors, because he cannot afford the price and the doctor do not allow him to pay for it later. It seems that the man has no choice, because as a good man, neither stealing the medicine nor letting his wife die is good choice for him. However, the fact is he can choose either, but he had to pay for what he want to do. It is his moral standards instead of other factors that make him decide which one to choose. It is common that those who committed crimes say they have no choice, because their poverty forces them to steal or rob, etc. However, as it mentioned before, they actually can choose not to committed crimes, not to hurt others, but their low standards of moral and ethics makes them to choose the bad one. Thus, although sometimes it is hard to make a choice, choices are available.

In severe circumstances, it is not only difficult to make a choice, but also hard to complete the thing that you have chosen. However, people can still try their best to realize what have chosen, and their spiritual power makes them persist. In the Old Man and the Sea, the old man seems have no choice but to fight with the big fish. Actually, he can give up fighting whenever he likes, but he does not, because he do not want to lose, and he do not want to be defeated completely. Therefore, no matter how bad the condition is, the spiritual power of human being can decide whether to persist or give up.

In conclusion, in many circumstances it is difficult to choose because there are many choices. In my opinion, the choices are usually available, but to decide which one to choose may be the most difficult thing. It is interest, standards of moral and ethics, persistence and the choices of others’ that influence the one to decide which one to choose.

People sometimes feel that they have no choice, maybe because the choices are not appealing or self-defeating, but the absence of choice is a circumstance that is very rare.

There are many choices in everyday life: choose what kind of breakfast to have, choose what lectures to have, choose what movie to watch. Usually,[所有选择都是好的情况基本上不会是usually的吧?] people find it difficult to make a choice because the choices available are all very good or the details of the choices are very complicated, so they are not sure whether they will make the best decision. For instance, when one has to decide the future vocation, there are many choices, but he has to consider his interest, the need of the society and other factors as well.[其实可以强调一下那种复杂的感觉:喜欢的工作吧工资不咋地,不喜欢的吧条件各方面都不错] Moreover, the choices of others may also influence the one who is to make a choice, [这种情况我认为是因为竞争心在作怪,希望自己比别人选的好,或者害怕和别人的不一样] because it seems easier for one to follow others’. However, the choice suitable for others may not be suitable for themselves. Although there are plenty of choices, s/he may find it difficult to choose from them. Therefore, in most circumstances, people are troubled with what they should choose instead of no choice.[这个观点满有力的。但是要进一步说那个:很多情况都是有得选的。找个看似没得选,其实有很多选的,会很有说服力,但是我也觉得这是很难做的。呵呵……理想状态]

However, I concede that sometimes people may think they have no choice, but  the real fact is that the choices available are all unappealing, and they do not want to choose any of them.[又开始我的理想状态了:这里最好有一点论述说,为什么这样。] A famous moral dilemma can serve as a persuasive example.
