144"It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value."
*a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.
In ancient times, when human being still strove for living, art emerged presenting us with insight into what is eternal and universal. While artists express their unique passion and insight applying to a medium -- through music, paintings, architecture, literature, and so forth -- beauty, moral, and wisdom accumulated, precipitated and shaped mankind civilization. On the other hand, the critic also involves in the formative process of treasures of lasting value.
Firstly, the artist of genius creates mountainous of noteworthy art works -- which allow us to appreciate something of lasting value. On the one hand, artists provide us a medium to enjoy the beauty of art. Just as many would insist, beauty is the very hallmark of what is truly "art". Through Bethoven's symphonies, we can hear the last word on human endurance; though Renaissance paintings of Madonna and child, we can see a revelation of transcendent spirituality. On the other hand, some narrative's arts, in fact, instruct us to some extent. When we watch a play a play that is deeply moral, we see ourselves in the characters, we recognize our destinies in the plot, and we find the moral dilemma of the action to be representative of problems in all human relationships. One can see that Mark Twain's novels deeply reflected the social reality of capitalism, and pathetic lives of the genteel society under a veil of vanity and arrogance.
Meanwhile, it should be acknowledge that truly valuable art works, acted as crystallizations of mankind civilization, will never fade under corrosion of time or libel of critics. No matter what kinds of serious criticism they have encounter, no matter how long they have to wait before being accepted, as long as they posses something worthy of being cherished, art works will never submerge in the sea of information which is pouring into our minds with a tremendous speed. The painting of Van Gogh can beat prove it. Throughout his entire career, Van Gogh only sode one of his paintings, while two of his still life paintings have recently broken all records in selling for $50 million. Notwithstanding hardly can anyone understand the beauty contained in his paintings at that time, an ever-lengthening honor roll distinguishes his works never passed down to history.
In addition, one can not deny that critics contribute to lead us to appreciate works of lasting value. On the community level, they help the mass discover the immortal art works, thus make us not overwhelm by the numerous of works; and they guide the public to apprehend the artists' meaning from various angles, thus make us better comprehend these marvellous works. From the previous remarks or introduction of a book made by critics, we can see the framework of a broad perspective, and penetrate the author's deep intention while not lose the lager picture. On the personal level, just as one old proverb says, "the world is full of beauty only if we have eyes to find out.'' And the so-called "last value" can not be defined in a strict way, as beauty is in the eye of the beholder, it largely depends on the audiences, not narrowly fouce on artists' perspective. The critics give us the eyes.
Admittedly, critics might undermine the spread of truly valuable works. Guide by pursuing wealthy and fame, critics may ignore some distinguishing movies worthy of remembering. In order to gain more profits and to be acknowledge by the mainstream, critics may reject to accept Van Gogh's paintings.
To conclusion, while artists infuse their aesthetic talent into works of lasting value, critics, by propagating these values, accompany with artists to promote the art into a more marvellous world.
