130. "How children are socialized today determines the destiny of society. Unfortunately, we have not yet learned how to raise children who can help bring about a better society."
现在孩子的社会化程度决定了社会的命运。可惜的是，我们还没有学会教孩子怎么样去建设一个更好的社会。

      With rapid social and technological change leading to increasing life complexity and psychological displacement, the significance of education can not be emphasized too much in this era.
   It is true that education has a critical effect on growing children who would eventually come upon the stage. School, the major means of education, has its mission. By inspiring them to cultivate their life skills---logical thinking, analysis, and creative problem solving---build their self-confidence and reap the ability to handle whatever life may present including all the unknowns in the future. On the other hand, by guiding them to investigate the nature of truth, build a good sense of social responsibility and public morality. All attributes of an individual cultivated through education are core factors influencing the extent to which he or she will ultimately contribute to a better society, while socialization is only one factor. “A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops,” a famous American historian H.B.Adams ever said.
   However, we should concede that despite the great influence of education especially to children, the current education system is not as perfect as we expect, even detrimental in some aspects. The detriment it produces is, in my view, both palpable and profound. Let’s bring our discussion here to a more present and practical context. For instance, several years ago an appalling occurrence happened during an exam in a high school of a city of east German. One student suddenly stood up and cried (and I paraphrase), “I don’t want to take this exam,” with subsequent shooting 17 others to death. Meanwhile, a recent example would make this point clear: the known Virginia Tech massacre that a student committed mass murder of 32 people and wounded 25 others in the shooting rampage and finally suicide. Such case is rather unimaginable but not rare in today’s school. For the individual, it has a debasing impact on the belief of life; for the society, it deserves a deep consideration and most important is to take actions for it.
   None of us would deny the crucial effort of education in respect that we humans are brought up bathing in the sun of it, nor does one alone have certainty to compensate the deficiency of the current education system. Thus, to better curb its unfavorable blights, it is advisable for us to take the following steps into consideration in due case. In the first place, we should pour more investment into the current education system. In the second place, we should appeal the authorities to work out relevant regulations to protect and serve the students of all ages. In the third place, we should cultivate and enhance people’s awareness that education is essential but not enough to a student especially in psychological attributes.
      From what I have discussed above, I strongly commit to the notion that the healthy growth of children profoundly affects the future of a nation even the world, not only because they would ultimately be dominator of human society, but also because they are the continuous driving force that human society advanced. Therefore, it depends on the education.
