TOPIC: ISSUE185 - "Scandals-whether in politics, academia, or other areas-can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could."

There is a controversy about the functions of the scandals-whether in politics, academics, or other areas. Different people have different views on this topic. As far as I am concerned, I agree that to some extent scandals are sometimes useful to reveal certain problems that we might otherwise overlook. However, overemphasizing the scandals will distract the public from the really pressing problems existing in the society.

Admittedly, scandals, whether in politics, academia, or other areas such as sport games, sometimes play an important role for people in discovering hidden problems. For instance, the Watergate scandal disclosed the political flaws about the underhanded president campaign and thus has attracted more attention to the scrutiny of the political system. The Watergate scandal is a concrete illustration to show the impact placed by the political scandals on the improvement and remedy of political system. Another example is the scandal in academia, the falsification of the experimental results committed by, known as the pioneer of stem-cell scientific research. Woo Suk Hwang has acknowledged that he and his assistors fabricated the experimental data in the paper, which aroused the credit crisis in the whole stem-cell research in the world. People began to be concerned about the truth of scientific accomplishments published by scientists which they ignored before. In addition, cordial scandals, black whistles and suchlike in sport games also contribute to the more and more attention to the justice in the competitive games. In short, scandals in any field sometimes are helpful for people to discover the hidden flaws and then bring improvement or reformation in turn in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could.

Though scandals sometimes can be useful, overemphasis on the scandals will lead to the neglect of the more important social problems. Take the entertainment scandals for example. Some medias spend a lot of money in digging out more details of entertainers’ private life in order to increase the sales of magazines through satisfying the public’s curiosity. But such scandals have nothing to do with improving the development of the society or the lever of people’s life other than making public lose the confidence with these entertainers and earning more profits for the publishers. On balance, it seems to me that the deleterious effects of the scandals in terms of financial expense to tax payers outweigh the benefits. In contrast, the money spent on the scandal can be used to solve or ameliorate many other really pressing problems in the society, for example reforming the health-care, improving the high level of education, promoting the national defense and security, advancing the technological development and so on which is much more helpful than satisfying people’s curiosity.

In addition, the mass media is responsible for the correct guidance of people’s attitude and opinion about the scandals. The mass media should focus on the scandals which would reveal the hidden problems in the politics, academics and other areas in order to attract the government and public attention to solve or improve the neglected flaws and promote the wholesome development of the society. On the other hand, the mass media also need to guide the public to put proper emphasis on the relatively less useful scandals and prevent these scandals from distracting the public from solving more important social problems.

To sum up, the functions of scandals are on a case-by-case basis. What we need is to put proper emphasis on different kinds of scandals in which the mass media play a significant role since the primary functions of scandals should be to reveal the hidden problems and promote the wholesome development of human beings ultimately.

Though scandals sometimes can be useful, overemphasis on the scandals will lead to the neglect of the more important social problems. 过度自然逻辑紧凑Take the entertainment scandals for example. Some medias spend a lot of money in digging out more details of entertainers’ private life in order to increase the sales of magazines through satisfying the public’s curiosity. But such scandals have nothing to do with improving(用ACCELERATE好像更准确) the development of the society or the lever of people’s life other than making public lose the confidence with these entertainers and earning more profits for the publishers. 观点有点陈旧 大部分人都这样写的,不过丑闻这题好像不好写出新的平衡观点
