issue 144. "It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value."
*a person who evaluate works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.
Do it is the artist, not the critic, who gives society something of lasting value? The speaker claims so. I concede that artists, such as a painter or sculptor, who is able by virtue of imagination and talent to create works of aesthetic value, play an irreplaceable role in the development of art. However, it will be a giant mistake to overlook the importance of the critic, who embodies the social value of these works of art, as descussed below.
First of all, we should recognize the art works’ aesthetic value distinct from its social value before we provide an evaluation towords the two kinds of people. Obviously, the true value of an artic work does not exist in the work itslfe but the social significance it brings. It is a common rule that a great work no matter how it presented, such as novels, films, music and paintings, can reflect the contemporary reality and the real life of certain kind which broaden the sight of us and make us think more about ourselves. Artist alone can never complete the mission.
Secondly, to extent that it is artic works’ social meaning that determines its true value, we can simply finger out that the critic, instead of the artist, is the one who connect the artic work with general people and energize the work with a social significance. Art is something absruse and hard to completely comprehened. Critic introduces and commends masterpieces to the people and brings the whole society to descuss, or even debate, over pieces which make people themselves involved. Exampled by “The Scream”, a graet painting by Edvard Munch in 1893, which seems to be scary and simple constructed at the very first sight. General people can only see a tortured man in the picture while under the introduction of critic we can see it conveys a universial emotion that is recognized and expirenced by all. This illustrates that: only through the help of critic, do people truly catch the artic meaning and do artic works truly find its position and lasting value in the society.
Simplely puts, an importance of an art work valued by its social meaning which can only be given by critic. Without the connection to the society, art alone is meaningless, much less to offer society something lasting value.
