The following appeared in a memo from the president of a company that makes breakfast cereals.
In a recent study, subjects who ate soybeans at least five times per week had significantly lower cholesterol levels than subjects who ate no soy products. By fortifying our Wheat-O cereal with soy protein, we can increase sales by appealing to additional consumers who are concerned about their health. This new version of Wheat-O should increase company profits and, at the same time, improve the health of our customers.
Based on a recent study that people who frequently ate soybeans would have a better health condition in terms of lower cholesterol level, this argument suggested the company to added soy protein into their product to appeal more potential customers and earn more revenue. However, this proposal included several logical defects so that it cannot be implemented in reality.
In the first place, the author misled the relationship between ingesting soy protein and the effect of decreasing cholesterol, so it is impractical to strengthen their products with this ingredient. Actually there is no persuasive proof to convince that it is soy protein which caused the reduction of cholesterol. Other elements, such as vitamin A, C, and D which are famous health contributor and advised by experts to eat every day, may virtually lead to this result.
Beside, this argument should be suspected in the area that decreasing cholesterol content in human body equally means building up invulnerable health condition. In fact, cholesterol played a significant role in our inner system. For example, cholesterol is the majority component of cell’s membrane; therefore, enough cholesterol reserve will stimulate the creation of new cells and impel the celerity of metabolism. Additionally, this functional substance favored the formation of various hormones. In a word, we cannot equate the function of cutting down cholesterol with to be healthy, especially to someone who is injured or lack of hormones.
Presumably, we regard their new produce as beneficial one for people’s health, but there is another unreliable deduction that customers could be attracted by this one due to their longing to be healthier, which could bring tremendous income for the company. The most essential factor, omitted by this adviser, is that the cost of their new productions would be dramatically increased involving in research funding, additional material, advertisement and etc. Even though they could input such great investment, too assertive is it to say that they could receive more back because people may not prefer their things as the reason of discretion of new things, flavor dislike and so forth.
To sum up, while the author had a splendored wish that improve public’s health and company’s profits, it is too impractical to demonstrate his/her suggest. If they really eager to actualize these beautiful imaginations, some indispensable steps would be done--pinpointing the exact ingredient causing cholesterol level declining, lining out appropriate custom and setting a market survey.
