Argument 101
The following appeared in a memo from the president of a company that makes breakfast cereals. "In a recent study, subjects who ate soybeans at least five times per week had significantly lower cholesterol levels than subjects who ate no soy products. By fortifying our Wheat-O cereal with soy protein, we can increase sales by appealing to additional consumers who are concerned about their health. This new version of Wheat-O should increase company profits and, at the same time, improve the health of our customers."

OUTLINE

A 提出观点，大豆对一部分人的健康有益，但不是全部。即使是收益人群，大家就愿意多购买改良产品吗？即使产量增加了，真的就会得到更多收益吗？

A 多食用豆类有许多优点，但是也有一些特定人群，如患肾病的人。不宜食用含蛋白石过高的豆类。所以，豆类不是对每个人的健康都有益。即使豆制品对相当一部分人的健康有益，谁又能确定，它和Wheal-O加在一起，功能不会被改变抑或削弱呢？

B 即使这种做法对一部分人的健康有益，但多加入豆类，必定要提高产品的成本，但是大家愿不愿意因为这个原因就多购买这个产品还是个问题。而且，不排除有些人，即使是关心自己健康的人对改良后产品的味道等不喜欢而减少购买。

C 即使销量增加了，但是，增加的收入一定会多余投入的成本吗?最后真的能带来profits吗？

ARTICLE

The president take that the outcome which the new product brings about for granted though its viewpoints seem to be reasonable at first. In the memo, the writer extends the soy’s function from acting on the people who have the need to decrease cholesterol to every customer; and asserts that’s this must bring about profits for the company. Put aside that there may be some customs are not fit to eat more soy products, even it is good to the majority of people, and will the soy protein works well after adding in the Wheal-O just like itself alone? What is more, whether the final profits will increase by adding soy protein to Wheal-o is much unsure. Too many uncertain factors exist for us to conclude.

The first big mistake the writer makes is he/she assumes that the soy products will benefit everyone’s health as a matter of course。The soy can help people get a lower cholesterol level yet some people may not fit to eat more, like the people who have nephropathy. So this kind of people may not by the new product, nether to say wanting to increase sales depending on appealing to this kind of customers. Of cause, we cannot ignore the part of people who can benefit from soy products indeed. But how can we be sure that the protein added to the Wheal-O cereal will work just like the soybean itself? Its function may change or weaken after mixing with other matter. Even whether the new product can benefit the majorities’ health is uncertain, not to mention that it can bring about more profits and improve the customs’ health.

Even supposing the new product can really do a good job in improving people’s health, will there be more people like to buy it after all? The function for improving health concerns(还有什么别的词可以用？) just one side of the product. The customs who care about health may think a lot of other sides like price, taste and so on. If we want to add soy protein to our primary product, the invested funds will surely be raised, and resulting in the increasing of price at the same time. Will the traditional customers who are concerned bout their health like to pay that money to by the new product? Maybe the price is unacceptable to them. Maybe they think paying that mount of money on buying soybeans themselves to get nutrition is more valuable. Besides, the tastes may change too. Whether people will like it for sure? After all, the increasing of the function of improving health may not bring high sales for the company.

Another, worse still，if the sales improved，is this increase can equal to more profits? It is dubious。We must invest more if we want to make the new product. Event thought the product is welcomed by lots of traditional customs and indeed increase the sales, whether the profits are much more than invested funs？
If not, we cannot conclude that this products can help us improve the profits.

To sum up, the soy products may not fit for every customers and the modified product’s function is still uncertain。 Even though this product itself is very good, it may not bring about profits for sure. There are too many complicated factors, and the president thinks about it so unilaterally that makes those unreasonable conclusions.

Just suffer, but do not miss.

What is more, whether the final profits will increase by adding soy protein to Wheal-o is much (soy protein to Wheal-o is much换成cost?)unsure. Too many uncertain factors exist for us to conclude(think about?).
