144"It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value."
*a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.
At first glance some may agree with the author that it is the artist, not the critic who give
society something of lasting value. But after a careful examination,it would be clear that fuction
of critics are as crucial as artists in the development of art.Lacking either of them should diminish
the value of art to society.
Artists, as the creator of original works, makes the most essential contribution to art, thus to society.
Since great artists are often recognized as the symbols of their time, with their works appreciated not
only by their contemporaries, but also by people living long after they expired.Such as LiBai in Tang Dynasty,
Leonardo Da Vinci in 15th Italy, and Ludwig Van Beethoven in 18th Europe. What All these famous names
share in common is that they create great works, influenced people, and finally defined their time. That's what
true artists do.
However, critics should not be ignored in the process of making art understood by citizens
and by evaluating art works and supporting artists make art complete and lively. First,
sometimes artists' work are delicate and sometimes elusive, making their value not easily discovered.
So it is critics' job to evaluate them and make them scrutable to common people.
If crtics hadn't discovered the greatness of Vincent Van Gogh,it would be impossible for
us now to appreciate his fascinating paintings. Art should be regarded as a gift to mankind,
not just being a private property of the artists, and without a thoughtful evaluation,
works would become meaningless and unavailable to you and me.
Second, appropriate and professional criticism on art works are beneficient to artists, making them realize theiradvantages and shortcuts. Artists can become well-skilled through practise, but only through learning from cogitate criticism can they develop a better sense of art.Nobody can make progress by sticking to his own ideas, not taking advice from others, the same is true for artists, especially before they become well known to public. For example,Verrocchio,a renowned Florentine painter and the teacher of Da Vinci, was very strick to him. There is no doubt that without his orders and critical comments,Da Vinci would not be so great as he is now. This shows that critics play an important role even before the great artists compose their works.
Finally, some critics support artists by finacially help them. Taking the Medici Family as example,
during Renaissance they were able to bring Florence under their family's power, allowing for a good atmosphere for art to thrive.Their financial support was significant because artists at that time mainly
depend on the commision of their works to make a living. Thanks to their support, the Renaissance art
could flourish.
Through out the history we see many brilliant artist didn't enjoy a successful career, their work not known
to public, also many great works were buried by improvident and conservative critics. What we really need is
the co-existence of brilliant artists and thoughtful critics in order to leave something valuable to our society. |
