TOPIC: ARGUMENT76 - The following appeared as part of an article in a health and beauty magazine.
"A group of volunteers participated in a study of consumer responses to the new Luxess face cream. Every morning for a month, they washed their faces with mild soap and then applied Luxess. At the end of that month, most volunteers reported a marked improvement in the way their skin looked and felt. Thus it appears that Luxess is truly effective in improving the condition of facial skin."

Merely based on the dubious assumption, the author claimed that Luxess was a very nice choice for those who want to improve their facial skin condition. The author supported the conclusion by providing a study, in which the volunteers applied Luxess after washing their faces. At first glance, this argument appeared to be somewhat convincing, but through further analysis, we can tell that it omits three logical flaws.
First and foremost, the study launched in this study can not convince me since it did not show us enough supporting details. There was neither exact numbers of the volunteers nor the number of the respondents who made the report. So the conclusion might be weak for the lack of data. What's more, even if the data was reliable, the volunteers were using the Luxess face cream only after washing their faces with mild soap. Thus we might doubt whether the using of Luxess or mild soap caused this marked improvement. To sum, the study conveyed in the article was unreliable.
Secondly, even assuming that the study mentioned above was effective to make the conclusion, the feeling and looking of the skin may consist many subjective elements, so the function of the face cream may not as good as the volunteers reported. From the psychological perspective, compared with the normal daily time, people will pay more attention to their condition of facial skin when taking the study. Therefore, they are probably to report a marked improvement after the study because they might seldom notice that before choosing as a volunteer. In general, the respondent's remarks were unsupportive to the impact of the Luxess.
Even assuming Luxess was effective and the volunteer's report was reliable, the author falsely claimed that the condition of facial skin was the same as the way people's skin looked and felt. There might be a lot of difference between the two. It is a common sense to us that the condition of facial skin included skin's luster and color, the most important element to change the facial condition is to keep a healthy body, or even the strong mind. So the author falsely equaled the felling and looking of the skin to the facial skin condition.
To sum up, neither study nor the remarks of respondents in this argument was dependable. In addition, there was no clear connection between the result of the survey and the final conclusion. In my opinion, if the argument could have provided us more details about the study, and more careful analysis by the author, it would be more convincing.
