TOPIC: ISSUE61 - "High-profile awards such as the Nobel Prize are actually damaging to society because they suggest that only a few people deserve such recognition."
WORDS: 453/574 TIME: 00:45:00 DATE: 2010-2-21 2:56:56
As we know, that the Noble Prize is given very rarely, only once a year for each kind. What's more, it is only a few people who are honored to get the prize. But can we say that this high-profile award damage to the society only considering what I present at the very beginning? I don't think so. I believe that the high-profile awards can benefit to the society.
First, let's take Noble Prize to stand for the high-profile awards. The Noble Prize winners always work hard 60 minutes an hour and 24 hours a day. They devote themselves to what they are focusing on, no matter what others say or comment. What's more, it is always a very long period of time for them to make/achieve a breakthrough and win the battle. It is always beyond other people's imagination how hard they work and how much patience they need. So, the winners deserve it, they get the prize at the price of scarifying their youth, their rest time when other people enjoy the free time chatting with friends. The prize they receive is the symbol that their work is confirmed by the academia or the society, which is important to the winner. The winner will make greater/further contributions to the field and give the society more benefits.
In addition, the Nobel Prize is the guider, which gives the direction of the academic world, so that other scientists or research workers can come together to that direction, which is always a need-to-solve problem. Like the Nobel Prize in 2009, the Nobel Prize of Physiology and Medicine was given to three scientists, who made a discovery of a special enzyme in the human chromosome. It is reported that this great research found the way to help people live longer. As the aging problem is not only a social issue, but also a problem many people want to solve it, the discovery made by the trio prove that it is worth researching and this field needs more scientists to go further. So the high-profile awards can present the ambitious people what is popular and the most need-to-solve problem, so they can devote themselves to making ever greater contributions. This is also a benefit to the society.
However, we must admit that the high-profile awards do damage the society sometimes. It is likely that the high-profile awards form a false image the only the short term success is valued, which will cause the science development unbalance. What’s worse, the high-profile awards are tempting, which may lead some scientist purchase for the money or fame instead of the sacred research itself. And it may also trigger some cut-throat competition or even scientific scandals. (Cantor’s Dilemma)
What we should do is not to blame the high-profile awards, after all, they are just means took by our human beings to make further contributions for our society. Whether the high-profile awards are given or not is not crucial/essential key point, it is the ultimate goals that really count. Even if there were no high-profile awards, the society should make progress to guarantee its people to lead a better life. So the high-profile awards are just the methods which can accelerate the process most of the time. Theses methods, as I have discussed above, are benefit to the society when we put them into perspective; it sets good models for others to learn from them, what's more, to make our earth a better place. |
