TOPIC: ARGUMENT147 - The following appeared in an editorial in a business magazine.
"Although the sales of Whirlwind video games have declined over the past two years, a recent survey of video-game players suggests that this sales trend is about to be reversed. The survey asked video-game players what features they thought were most important in a video game. According to the survey, players prefer games that provide lifelike graphics, which require the most up-to-date computers. Whirlwind has just introduced several such games with an extensive advertising campaign directed at people 10 to 25 years old, the age-group most likely to play video games. It follows, then, that the sales of Whirlwind video games are likely to increase dramatically in the next few months."

In this argument, the aguer concludes that the sales of Whirlwing(W) video game will be likely to increase dramatically in the next few months compared to that over the past two years. To support his point the arguer provides a survey conducted to video game plays. At first glance, this argument seems reasonable, however, closer scrutinies reveal that it has several logical fallacies.
To begin with, the arguer failed to consider the all facters which can impact the business of W vedio games. Besides the features of the video game, there are more situation that be possiblly make the sales of vedio game decline. It is possible that there is new trend for the former game players to transfer their attention to other place, such as the politics, curriculums, or part-time job. All this can reduce the free time that suitable for playing game. It is also possible the new generation prefers TV, films to the vedio games. Without considerations of these possibilities, the argument is presumptuous.
Moreover, even we grant the the features of the video game is the most strongest influence to the game players, the survey tells us nothing. The survey is too vague in who conducted it, how many video game players were asked, and how many video players responded to the survey, where the survey was conducted. It is possible that only few people were asked and seldom responsed to the survey. It is also possible that the survey was conducted only in a very small market part. Without these information, the survey is not representative.
Furthermore, even we assume the survey is OK, the sales strategy was not responsed to the main sales points. The arguer need provider more information on how W to increase more graphics in its new version game. Perhaps W had limited resource on this side. The quality of the new version game is not improved. Perhaps W has already was well known in the market, the advertising campaign show no effect to increase the further sales.
To sum up, this argument is unpersuasive. To further substantiate this argument, the arguer need provide more information about the new feature of the is the main facter, and there have been action for improvement this side. |
