自己花了好长时间写的第一篇,谢谢各位啦
Thesurest indicator of a great nation is represented not by the achievements ofits rulers, artists, or scientists, but by the general welfare of its people. Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree ordisagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position youtake. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways inwhich the statement might or might not hold true and explain how theseconsiderations shape your position.
The speaker maintains that instead of considering achievements of itsrulers, artists and scientists to be a good measurement of a nation, we shouldfocus much more on the general welfare of its residents and citizens. I totallydisagree with the assertions. In my view the term 'welfare' is actually toovague that hampers its ability to be used as a standard indicator when judginghow great a nation is. Moreover, I prefer the opinion that nations are morecompetitive with the achievements of its rulers, more civilized with the effortof its artists, and win more respect with devoted scientists and bettertechnology.
Firstly, the definition of'welfare' seems so wide that it is so difficult to measure it quantitatively, and there exists some paradox. 'Welfare' usually represents the state of doingwell especially in respect to good fortune, happiness, well-being, orprosperity. In unpredictably determined events, good fortune actually happenswith infinite small probability, and paradoxically, good fortune for someone ispossibly an evil bane for another person. For instance, when it comes to rain, farmers would thank god for the sweet gift and hope that it will do some helpfor the rich autumn harvest, but for a well-prepared outside party holder, itwould be a totally disaster. And happiness is also an emotional expression thatresists quantitatively measurement. By just looking at a happy face, how couldwe nonprofessional people tell the true emotion lies under it? Though expertsstudy facial expression could possibly see, it is really a hard work toscrutinize the happiness of citizens all around the nation, not to mention thewhole world. Furthermore, if the word 'propensity' represents to be successful, how could we set the criterion? No doubt, the definition still leaves us inobscurity.
Secondly, with powerful andeffective rulers' leading, certain progress of the nation in aspects such aseconomic and political environment would help to receive corresponding famearound the world. Think about how great the new deal was, when established byFranklin D.Roosevelt, in relieving, recovering and reforming of the US. Andcertainly, we can not forget every endeavor Abraham Lincoln made in preservingthe union. Also he ended the slavery which had been existed for such a longtime. Both of these presidents did earnest work and promoted the status of the US at the sametime.
Last but not least, with theefforts of inspired artists and devoted scientists, respects from other nationswould come not only because of its advanced technology, but also the mental andcultural contribution to every human being living on earth. To explain this, weshould consider Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven in their contribution to the fieldof music. They made Vienna a dreaming heaven formusic lovers, and furthermore, they made a big step for the conversion from theschool of Baroque to Classic. And in the field ofscience, the construction of building of physics is based on the three laws ofmotion discovered by Newton. On the individual prospect, the artists andscientists made themselves famous internationally, which may lead to them more connoisseurs and supporters to continue theircherished work. On the public prospect, they made people more civilized, thatis to say, more compassion, adoration, sensitivity towards beauty, and morereasoned, critical, flexible in confronting problems.
To sum up, on the one hand, lackof quantitatively measurement hinders general welfare being a valid andconvenient criterion for the evaluation of a nation. On the other hand, thespeaker underestimate the significance when it comes to the contribution to anation of its rulers, artists and scientists, which not only proves to be thecatalyst of the elevation of a nation's fame, but also the treasure of humankind all around the world.
