2月9日 Topic: Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? At universities and colleges, sports and social activities are just as important as classes and libraries and should receive equal financial support. Use specific reasons and examples to explain your choice.
Extracurricular Activities
Since the educational department has enacted the law that make sure the time of instruction after class, people are always holding two contrasting views about a controversial issue of whether sports and social activities are just as important as classes and libraries and should receive equal financial support at universities and colleges.
Opponents argue that the basic objective of being a college student is to do his or her utmost to gain academic knowledge, instead of wasting students' time and tax payers' money on other unnecessary activities while proponents claim that in order to survive in today fierce society, academic knowledge just only a part of requirement and extracurricular activities become more significant efforts throughout our life. I agree with the latter idea firmly with the intensive purpose and substantial reasons.
First of all, let's get down the fundamental and realized the most common reason for us going to university is to find a good job and have a better ability to adjust in the anxious social environment. With economic and social development, some skills, including communication skill, critical thinking, problem solving, become of particular importance. Therefore, when there is growing tendency that companies require employees to have various kinds of capacity, some people who boast only narrowly academic knowledge are seldom popular in the job market that they still were in the last one decade. For developing students' multi-skilling, it's really justifiable to increase the finance into cultivate students' extracurricular courses or activities.
Furthermore, in our life, the influence of sports and social activities upon the physiological and mental of the students has been really positive. For example, I like to participate in sports and social activities after my classes and I deem that these activities can bring many benefits for me indeed. First, regular study is so stressful, but once I take part in sports activities such as playing football, running and swimming, I can forget all the daily trouble and get relaxed. Also, sport activities can strengthen my body condition to provide sufficient energy for supporting my tight study schedule. At last, I enjoy join social activities, especially meeting people and making friends. I think these activities improve my communication skill greatly. After I paid more attention to get along with my friends, I am able to put forth my idea more clearly and more easily than before and I have strong ability to solve dispute and enhance cooperation with other people. I cannot acquire such useful skills by reading academic books. Thus, I strongly support to treat extracurricular activities as well as academic courses.
Moreover, it has long been customary that a lot of social problems came from exceeded highlight the importance of verbal ability and without any consideration to the effect of other practical capacity, as at least it seems to happen in China. Since economic reform in our country, the government forced middle school students who had a great inclination to go to university or college to attend National College Entrance Examination which was solitary weighted in favor of specialization, because the government championed that academic knowledge is the sole power to develop economy of our country. The educational system had been build with no regard for training multi-skills and students who want to study in the university had to join this exam, unless some students intended to give up his study or went aboard for study but they are minimal. So in last thirty years, more and more people were lack of independent living ability by the reason that when middle schools always imposed them into academic study and assigned immeasurable homework for them, students only have time to be engaged in study academic knowledge and ignored the statue of living ability. Their regular lives should rely on their parents, even they become adults. Hence, if the government still has no idea to lay emphasis on extracurricular activities and the education of multi-skills, the consequence will definitely serious.
In conclusion, I advocate that government and school should inject more funds into extracurricular activities and cultivate us become multi-skills and creative people. Because of this, I believe that our country will have a splendid future. |
