The speaker suggests that when college students choose a major, they should base their choices on the job market in order to easily get a job after they graduate. I fundamentally agree with this suggestion because it is sound to certain extent. However, as college students, when facing with the choice of major, they need to consider more aspects than the availability of jobs in that field.
Firstly, it seems that choosing a field of many job opportunities benefits college students a lot. They can easily get a job and apply what they learn into practice. Having a job means they do not need to worry about their lives after graduation. Especially for those who loan to go to college, stable income means they can pay off the mortgage sooner and get rid of economic dependence to their impoverished parents. Consider the economic depression and the fiercely competitive job market today, hunting for a job is not easy for students without any experience. Therefore, possibility of getting a position will be higher if college students study in a hot field.
However, if a student does not study well, he may still hardly find a job in the field of his major where job vacancies are enormous. There is no doubt that none of the employer is willing to hire a student who lacks required skills and knowledge. For most people, if he is tired of a certain subject or lack of capability in some fields, he’ll hardly master that knowledge well. Therefore, to decide which field to study also needs to consider one's hobbies and talent. Hobby is a great motivation on our’s way to achievements, because it helps us keep enthusiastic over what we learn. What's more, if we can apply our talent on our study field, we can learn more efficiently than average person.
Last but not least, to be hired after graduation, the trend of the ever changing job market cannot be ignored. Due to the rapid development of science and technology, the hot field is switching continuously. A field may be very popular when you enter college, but declines four years later because of the replacement by an upgraded technology. Therefore, college students not only need to choose a field full of job vacancies, but also have to analyze the trend of future when they make their choices.
To sum up, when college students choose a field as their future majors, they had better combine individual hobbies, capability as well as the job market situation now and future together. And actually, we should also be aware that most of the study fields are related with each other. Therefore, remaining flexible in thinking and fostering the ability of quick self-learning can enable us to apply the mastered knowledge in any new fields. That's the footstone of success in the competitive job market.
