First, when you don't understand anything of magoosh, the best way for you is to ask its tutor for help and they will give you what you want. Below is my opinion.
Here, "small-concert venues" refers to "intimate learning environment" and "lecture halls" refers to "waters of anonymity".
More and more incoming freshmen would come to attend the lectures and because lectures halls always include plenty of information, useful or useless, It is necessary for them who are long accustomed in an intimate learning environment to find what they need.

sentence shift,以前是那样，现在这样，所以有必要习惯这样
1.大学课堂人数与concert人数媲美，给一个背景就是大学课堂人多(treacherous waters of anonymity)
2.freshman以前是coddled in intimate learning environmen就是说以前尤其高中人少可以互动而且人人知道你是谁我是谁，非常intimate
两个背景contrast，就是说freshman有必要习惯这种大学的人多我不知道你，你不知道我的环境(it .......to freshman to become adept at navigating the treacherous waters of anonymity)
