The following appeared as part of an article in a health and beauty magazine.
'A group of volunteers participated in a study of consumer responses to the new Luxess face cream. Every morning for a month, they washed their faces with mild soap and then applied Luxess. At the end of that month, most volunteers reported a marked improvement in the way their skin looked and felt. Thus it appears that Luxess is truly effective in improving the condition of facial skin.'

In this argument, the editor concludes that Luxess face cream is effectively in improving the condition of facial skin in a mood of health science. To support the conclusion, the arguer establishes a survey drawing form a volunteer group. Form the reported ones the arguer asserts the very conclusion positively. Having analyzed the reason line of the argument, I have some logical doubt.

Firstly, this argument is based on a survey, however, the effect of the statistics is open to doubt. As a careful reader, one would get the information of a group people volunteering the study of new Luxess face cream in the article. Moreover, the statistics is based on the responded ones. That is to say, how many people participating in the study and how many people responding is not certain through the argument. Maybe the arguer intends to cover these numbers intentionally for some commercial reason, maybe it is a result of carelessness, but the argument suffers from the lack of information and seems to be flawed basically.

Secondly, even if the survey is so effective as to make a ground response, the constitution of face skin is not clear yet. Admittedly, though most volunteers reported a marked improvement in the way their skin looked and felt, whether they feel same as their saying and their face skin improve as truly and measurable as they said is not sure, neither. Perhaps these participator have to report positively since the avid of free Luxess face cream, and the possibility of makeup information is also placed in this situation.

Last, even if face improvement is so popular and scientifically founded that it could prove the causal relationship between Luxess and face improvement exists, unfortunately, the arguer fails to exclude other possibilities of leading to face improvement. It might the mild soap or some generic and environment reason that lead to the face skin progress.

To sum above up, in one word, the reason line of the argument is not convincing enough until some information could reflect the effect of the survey, face improvement could be based on some scientific factors as well as the accomplishment of other possibility exclusion.
