Governments must ensure that their major cities receive the financial support they need in order to thrive, because it is primarily in cities that a nation's cultural traditions are preserved and generated.

According to the speaker, the governments should try their best to financially support the major cities’ culture because these cities preserve and generate the nation's culture mostly. I agree that the major cities play important roles in generating and preserving a nation’s cultural traditions, however, I can't agree with the speaker that thereby the financial support for these cities should become a must for the government.

Admittedly, major cities preserve and generate much of the nation's cultural traditions. Cities, beginning with groups of people living in a compact community around certain areas which are rich in resources, developing with the increasingly busy trading, generate the culture and the core value of the nation. Most of the major cities all over the world represent their nations economically or culturally or both, for example, to name just a few, New York for the US, Paris for France, London for England, Beijing for China. Indeed, the generating process of the cities is the cultivating process of the culture.

However, the culture in the major cities sometimes can not completely represent the whole nation, especially in the nations covering a large area. for example, Mesa Verde National Park, containing the most notable and best-preserved ancient cliff dwellings in the United States, is located in southwestern Colorado. Another convincing example for this point would be China. Boasting a long history and vast territory, many of its cultural and historical sites are not in its major cities. Mountain Tai, for example, lying near a small town named Taian, is the object of an imperial cult for nearly 2,000 years, with the artistic masterpieces found in perfect harmony with the natural landscape, and is always a source of inspiration for Chinese artists and scholars and symbolizes ancient Chinese civilizations and beliefs. In addition, China's population contains 55 minorities, each of which boasts its particular culture. Most of them are living together in the vast mountain or desert areas of China rather than major cities.

Actually, financial support for the major cities' culture is not a must for the government. Firstly, there are many private individuals and businesses would like to patronize the cultural development of the major cities. So it is not necessary for the government to intervene to preserve the culture in major cities. In fact, the public security, health problem, economical development, and solutions to many other social problems should become the government's foremost task. Secondly, it is the culture generated and preserved in hinterlands not in major cities that needs the government's financial support most. The cultural traditions there, which are seldom anything related to the mainstream culture thus can not attract the private patronage much, are often preserved simply and improperly by the local people, which may course the damage to the cultural heritages. Only financially support is not enough. The government should, at the same time, propagand the significance of these areas thus attracting more social concern on them.

In conclusion, on one hand, major cities are significant in generating and preserving the cultural traditions of the nation, and private patronages are the main financial support for them. Governments thereby need not to intervene the cultural preservation in the major cities. On the other hand, in some countries, especially countries with vast territory, the culture are also splendid in the hinterland. Financially and physically supports by governments for the cultural preservation and development in these areas are needed.
