40 "Scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society. It is more important that they pursue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem."

  Nowadays, the society seems become eager to quick success and instant benefit. And some of the schools and researchers only concerned with their work that makes a contribution to the large society. Should they abandon their interesting? In my opinion, the answer is obviously no. Everyone wants to benefit the society. And the right attitude is to work follow the interests of their own, Here are some reasons.
  Firstly, we do not have the idea of which area benefit people more in the future. Even the smartest doctor in the world can not make the right answer. So it is very fool to concern with the work which makes a contribution to the large society today. It seems like put all the eggs in a basket. If the basket is broken, you have nothing. The better way is to put some eggs on the basket, some on the table and some on your hand. Computer today can make much more contribution to the society and can make people earn much more money. So a lot of people study the computer even they do not like it at all. As a result, schools and researchers pay great attention on the area. How ridiculous they are! From the history, we can see that the great innovation always happen on the field that only a little people concerned. In the 19th, Newton established the building of physics and it seemed so perfect that time that nobody want to doubt it. But just a few years later, many world-shaking ideas are developed in the field by some young talent. We draw the conclusion that nobody can predict which area would contribute most in the future. Maybe some area seems like a dark house today, but it becomes a pop area tomorrow.
  Secondly, we can not do our best unless we work with your interest. Interest is the original impetus of the work. Can you imagine that you do some work that you even don not want to see it any more? Without interests in work, you obviously lack of passion. What you want is to finish the daily work with no creativity. I have a good friend, whose parents really want him to be a musician. And he has passed the highest level –10 level piano test when he is 15 years old. Obviously he has the talent in the music. Once I do my math homework, and he stand aside. Suddenly he told me that he have much more interesting on the math. Then he gave up his piano and went to school to study math. Now he is a doctor student study in math in Oxford. Interesting gives people such a power that people can not imagine.
  Admittedly, we should make some limits about interests in the school. Following your own interesting do not mean that you can change your idea daily. When some students see new thing, they want to try. As a result, they do not persist in anything. It will make them fail in every field. So it is the school’s duty to make some rule about change to any other interests. And for the students, we must stick to our interests, not change interests often.
  In the sum, it is more important that they pursue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem. Interests bring us the original impetus. And if we have the strong confidence, we will succeed.
