140. "People who pursue their own intellectual interests for purely personal reasons are more likely to benefit the rest of the world than are people who try to act for the public good."
===================================================
Outline:
1. In general, people who concerns about only intellectual interests of themselves are harmful for society, because they care little about the overall well-being of humankind.
2. In the field of science, the scientists who consider nothing but how to accomplish academic achievements may bring disasters to the humankind.
3. On the contrary, people who place the public good on the first position play positive roles in benefiting the world
======================================================
Are people who pursue their own intellectual interests purely more beneficial for the world than people who try to act for the public good, as the speaker asserts? I strongly disagree with the speaker's assertion. People who pursue nothing but their own intellectual interests usually neglect the general interests of the rest of the world, and are negative for the development of the society. My points of contention are discussed as below.
In general, people who concerns about only intellectual interests of themselves are harmful for society, because they care little about the overall well-being of humankind. In the process of pursuing one's interests, it is inevitably to conflict with others' interests sometimes. In this case, people who consider only self-interest are likely to attain individual goals in spite of possible infringement to others’ benefits. Such behavior in generally considered as immoral, and even illegitimate in modern society, for they lack a basic aspect of humanity-taking care of others. As everyone can see, people who concerns about only their interests are egocentric, selfish, and even unmerciful, thus they could hardly be beneficial for the society.
In the field of science, the scientists who consider nothing but how to accomplish academic achievements may even bring disasters to humankind. Consider the polemical use of the Cloning Technique. Currently, it is banned by most countries to clone a human individual, for the reason that it might cause severe controversies in the field of ethics, in spite of its scientific values. However, some groups of "mad" scientists have announced their plans to clone a human individual despite severe aftermath. These scientists pursue only potential academic achievement, while ignoring the possibility that the clones may destroy the moral and ethnic standard of the modern society. Scientists who care little about the effect of their researches are horrible, because they possess the mightiest weapon-science.
On the contrary, people who place the public good on the first position play positive roles in benefiting the world. The change of Einstein's attitude on A-bomb is a compelling example. When Einstein heard about Nazi’s plan to develop nuclear weapons, he wrote to President Roosevelt to suggest that immediate actions be taken to develop A-bomb before Nazi. After war, with the conscience as human, Einstein devoted himself into the fight against nuclear weapons. With the title of “the father of A-bomb”, he whereas considered only about the eternal peace and security of humankind. Einstein set not only an academic standard for every scientist, but also a moral standard for each individual living on this planet.
In sum, people's craving to pursue self-interests despite hurting other's feelings and destroying other's benefits cannot become the impetus to spur the developmental progress of the world. Taking care of others' interests is a glorious aspect of humanity, with which we should imbue everyone. Moreover, it is strongly required to establish a high moral standard among scientists because have the most responsibility to act for public good.
