9.The following appeared in a memorandum from a dean at Omega University.
"Fifteen years ago, Omega University implemented a new procedure that
encouraged students to evaluate the teaching effectiveness of all their
professors. Since that time, Omega professors have begun to assign higher
grades in their classes, and overall student grade averages at Omega have
risen by thirty percent. Potential employers apparently believe the grades
at Omega are inflated; this would explain why Omega graduates have not
been as successful at getting jobs as have graduates from nearby Alpha
University. To enable its graduates to secure better jobs, Omega
University should now terminate student evaluation of professors."
1,平均成绩上升不代表全部,也不一定是教授主观提高的,可能是教学质量提高了
2,招聘者不大可能去考察学校之间成绩差别,成绩也不是招聘的唯一标准
3,两个学校专业不同人才不同不可比
[size=-2][size=-2][size=-2][size=-2][size=-2][size=-2][size=-2]In this argument the arguer contends that Omega University (OU) should terminate student evaluation of professors, aiming at better job chances for the graduates. The main reasoning the arguer listed is that as evaluation caused high rising of student grade averages given by professors, potential employers believe the grades at OU are inflated. In addition, the arguer made a compare with nearby Alpha University, from which graduates successfully get jobs, to support his view. Actually, the arguer fails to link the exact relationship among the evidences.
First and foremost, the arguer obviously focused on only the disadvantages of the evaluation procedure and totally neglected the advantages. The arguer’s conclusion depends on an assumption that the evaluation is responsible to make the professors give their students higher grade although the students’ learning effect has not improved. The only evidence cited in the argument is that the average grades have risen by thirty percent. But a careful examine will discover that the evidence doesn’t mean all the students’ grades is enhanced subjectively by professors, not to mention another possibility that the students’ study effect and professors’ teaching quality have been improved since the procedure.
On the other hand, there is no evidence to indicate that employers tend to reject OU graduates because of the evaluation. In common sense, most employers hardly know, nor do they care, measures like evaluation taken by universities. How could they indicate that the graduates’ grades are inflated? What an employer does to choose an employee is not only to see the grade compared with others but also to have an face to face interview. Employers actually consider little about the grade standards between universities, or even sometimes interview and competent ability are more important.
In addition, it is unconvincing to compare OU graduates with AU graduates in getting jobs without sufficient comparable condition. Although the universities are near, whether the two universities are same at majors and provide similar kinds of graduates is not mentioned in the argument. Whether the compare is equal is worth doubting.
To sum up, the evidences presented in the argument is insufficient to indicate that the evaluation procedure is the sole reason responsible to successfully getting jobs. To make it more logically acceptable, the arguer should provide more concrete information and make equal compare to meet the conclusion.
