With the development of technology, video cameras are becoming more and more popular, both for specialists or amateurs. One of the main reasons accounting for its popularity is that video camera can provide us with accurate and convincing records than traditional written records. Here the question arises: has video camera become more important than traditional written records for documentation? The answer needs a careful analysis.
Video cameras, equipped with many modern technologies, have the power to provide people with very accurate and convincing information. Records from video are vivid, objective and continuous, which is crucial in the legal process. For instance, video cameras can accurately monitor what has happened in accidents and provide evidence for handing these accidents. Besides, many details of daily life can be logged and therefore people can memorize their cherish moments in the past. Nowadays, it is common that people use video camera to document the process of wedding, birthday party, graduation ceremony, or even a happy tower.
Despite the advantages of video camera in keeping recording, it still has its own weakness. As is well known, video camera can only mechanically document what has happened, but it is impossible for a camera to judge and analyze what it recorded, let alone the profound meaning of that documentation. Furthermore, video cameras are so costly that it is not practical for people to use them for daily documentation. In this sense, traditional written records has its merit.
Traditional written records, on the contrary, can not provide people with vivid pictures. However, written records make it possible to deeply describe contents behind the superficial phenomena. For example, feelings of a character and cognition of a particular event can recorded in time, which is quite difficult for cameras to do. Besides, people who do written record job can freely determine which materials are necessary or what mode to follow. What is more, people can also conveniently add to documentation their opinions as well as critics. Finally, it is cheap and convenient for people to document life with traditional written records, which is probably the most important advantage of written records over video cameras.
Since both of the two forms of documentation have their merits and suitable for different purpose, it seems unadvisable for us to absolutely accept one and discard the other. Using cameras for all the daily affairs is impractical while using written records for a birthday party is ridiculous. We should properly choose the best manner to document, and even sometimes we can actually combine the two forms together.
To sum up, both video cameras and written records have their own merits and weakness. They serve us for different needs. Therefore, the statement that cameras have become important than written records is unilateral.
