The following appeared in a memo from the vice president of marketing at Dura-Sock, Inc.
'A recent study of Dura-Sock wearers suggests that our company is wasting the money it spends on its patented 'Endure' manufacturing process, which ensures that our socks are strong enough to last for two years. Dura-Sock has always advertised its use of the 'Endure' process, but the new study shows that the average Dura-Sock customer actually purchases new Dura-Socks every three months. Furthermore, Dura-Sock customers surveyed in our largest market, northeastern United States cities, say that they most value Dura-Sock's stylish appearance and availability in many colors. These findings suggest that Dura-Sock can increase its profits by discontinuing its use of the 'Endure' manufacturing process.'

In this argument, the vice president of marketing at Dura-Sock suggests that Dura-Sock can increase the company's profits by discontinuing its use of the 'Endure' manufacturing process. To support his argument, he cite two studies: one shows that some customes finger it is a waste of money to purchase a patent that protect the 'Endure' manufacturing process for they think the socks are strong enough to last for two years; the other reports that customers actually buy new Dura-Socks every three months. A survey that indicates weareres pay more attention to the colors and appearance also adds to support his conclusion that the company needs no more to spend money on keeping the process of 'Endure'. However, this argument suffers from several reasoning fallacies though it seems logical at first glance.

Firstly, the president fails provide us the detail information about who participate in the first study, and what kind of people they are. A patent of 'Endure' manufacturing process is the most valuable technology for a sock company, for it can warrant the duplicate from other manufactories. However, this knowledge may not be reached to all the people, especially have no common sense of business. And without such unique technology, other manufactories can easily followed the style of Dura-Socks which will result in the decrease income for Dura-Socks. As a vice president, it is foolish for him to take such a vague and misleading study as an evidence to suggest that money spent on patent is wasteful.

Secondly, the second study that average Dura-Sock customer actually purchases new Dura-Socks every three months does not indicate that the customs may not wear the socks after 3 months. It is possible that due to the fine quality of Dura-Sock they love to buy another one to change a color or take as a present for his or her friends. The president ignored other more likely factors that lead to the customs to buy socks.

Thirdly, the survey conducted in the northeastern United States cities which are the largest markets may also have fallacies. Again, we have no detail information about how this survey conduct, what is the question asked to people there. We have no evidence show that people don not care about the quality of socks. It is very likely that just the warrant of the quality of the Dura-Sock, they select better color and appearance in only this brand rather than other poor brands which have no patented 'Endure' manufacturing process.

In sum, the argument is not persuasive as it stands, for it is merely based on unconvincing facts and speculation of his own. To strengthen the argument, the vice president would have to campaign more studies express the opinion of customs about endure quality.
