Argument142
------题目------
The article entitled 'Eating Iron' in last month's issue of Eating for Health reported that a recent study found a correlation between high levels of iron in the diet and an increased risk of heart disease. Further, it is well established that there is a link between large amounts of red meat in the diet and heart disease, and red meat is high in iron. On the basis of the study and the well-established link between red meat and heart disease, we can conclude that the correlation between high iron levels and heart disease, then, is most probably a function of the correlation between red meat and heart disease.
------正文------
The argument concludes that the correlation between red meat and heart disease is most probably because of the relationship between high iron level and heart disease.  To justify the conclusion, the arguer cites evidence based on a recent study reported on Eating for Health and a link between red meat and heart disease, which seems convincing at the first glance.  However, the argument suffers several fallacies after a scrutiny.

In the first place, the author provides no scientific evidence to indicate the relationship between the high levels of iron in diet and an increased risk of heart disease.  Only a cited study reported by a magazine is insufficient to illustrate the conclusion, in that the arguer fail to demonstrate whether Eating for Health is authorization for the report or whether the study is researched by scientist in health.  Many health experts have advised to eat food with more iron.  So the reasoning based on such evidence is groundless.

In the second place, there is no data available to justify the well-established link between red meat and heart disease.  The author only cite the result but lack facts, such as the how many iron red meat contains, and how to eat would cause the iron be absorbed by body.  Lacking of such information, we cannot convince the well-established link.

In the third place, even exists the well-established link between red meat and heart disease, the author fails to rule out other possibilities that may be more important in linking red meat and heart disease than the high levels of iron.  People eat various things everyday, and many of them are high in iron, while no report other food with more iron are related with heart disease.  As we all know, red meat are abundant in fat, which would cause many healthy problems.  If the high level of iron may be the cause of heart disease, so it is probably with the high level of fat.

In sum, the argument is not persuasive as it stands, to make the argument more convincing, the author should provide more information about the iron, red meat and heart disease and their relationships.
To be a brave girl!
