Practicality is now our great idol, which all powers and talents must serve. Anything that is not obviously practical has little value in today's world.
This is an era of pragmaticism. Almost every goods, virtue, ritual, and works is being judged in the market, and being forced justified themselves by their cash value. The speaker in the title statement seems to advocate this tendency, and suggest that all powers and talents must serve the idol of practicality. I will argue, however, although in the fields of economy and politics pragmaticism is indispensable, yet in the field of education the practical concerns should not be exaggerated, for the real aim of educating our next generations is far from letting them only be practical in the future.

To begin with, there is no doubt that politicians and business persons take practicality their top priority. In such a world of severe competition, it would be fatal for a business person to be too idealistic. Many times we hear the news that some companies devote large sum of money to charity and claim their concern about the future of the whole society; yet earning profit is always the primary aim of this vocation. Any neglect of this aim would result in their loss in the market and finally go bankruptcy. Thus any company--even including those willing to do charities--has to take the practicality the vital status.

The same thing happens also in the arena of politics. Many theorists like Plato once bear the dream of a leader with idealism and leading people to achieve this goal; yet they nevertheless all failed since the political realm is too complicated to be only idealism. In today's democratic world, a leader first has to win the popularity to get enough votes. This requires them to take care of the practical concerns of most of the population, for common people nowadays concern more about their own interest rather than a great and ideal dream which can be achieve only long after. An idealist might still win people's respect, yet he or she will hardly win an election.

However, in the realm of education, overladen pragmaticism might be harmful. In many pragmatists' view that the traditional academic disciplines such as philosophy, history, logic, literature, classic languages, etc., are no longer of significance in school education, since they seem to have little practical value in today's world. However, people must be very careful to this tendency. Although these traditional disciplines cannot provide student professional skills to be successful as law school and business school does, they are of vital importance in cultivating students’ personalities and characters. Long has our predecessors found that these traditional disciplines are helpful to train students to be all-round persons. It is from those disciplines that students learn a good value judgment, a deep thinking mind, and a gentle character. Too much emphasis on professional education, on the contrary, will narrow students’ horizon and be harmful for them in the long run. People must notice that no matter how the world changes, how to be a good person is always more important than how to be a good worker. Our education should not follow the pragmatic trend and reject classic trainings only because they have no obvious practical value.

In sum, it is reasonable for politicians and business persons to devote their talents to practicality; yet for educators, they should not forget the real aim of education: to teach our next generations how to be good persons, and stay cool in this pragmatic era.

Practicality is now our great idol, which all powers and talents must serve. Anything that is not obviously practical has little value in today's world.
This is an era of pragmaticism(pragmatism? Almost every goods, virtue, ritual,(这两个也being judged in the market?) and works is being judged in the market, and being forced justified themselves(好像有语法错误?) by their cash value.

To begin with, there is no doubt that politicians and business persons take practicality (+as吗?) their top priority. (有个例子就好啦!)Thus any company--even including those willing to do charities--has to take the practicality the vital status.

The same thing happens also in the arena of politics. Many theorists like Plato once bear the dream of a leader with idealism and leading people to achieve this goal; yet(换换吧!跟上一段重复!) they nevertheless all failed since the political realm is too complicated to be only idealism.(直接用due to来引导是不是简洁些?) In today's democratic world, a leader first has to win the(删?) popularity to get enough votes. This requires them to take care of the practical concerns of most of the population(这句号很绕。Take care of 跟concern语义上好像重复了。), for common people nowadays concern more about their own interest rather than a great and ideal dream which can be achieve only long after. An idealist might still win people's respect, yet he or she will hardly win an election.(嗷嗷绝对!

Although these traditional disciplines cannot provide student professional skills to be successful as law school and business school does, they are of vital importance(=paramount?) in cultivating students’ personalities and characters. Long has our predecessors found that these traditional disciplines are helpful to train students to be all-round persons. It is from those disciplines that students learn a good(good sense of?) value judgment, a deep thinking mind, and a gentle character. Too much emphasis on professional education(training?), on the contrary, will narrow students’ horizon and be harmful for them in the long run. People must notice that no matter how the world changes, how to be a good person is always more important than how to be a good worker. Our education should not follow the pragmatic trend and reject classic trainings only because they have no obvious practical value.(有喊口号之嫌!)

In sum, it is reasonable for politicians and business persons to devote their talents to practicality; yet for educators, they should not forget the real aim of education: to teach our next generations how to be good persons, and stay cool in this pragmatic era.

Goodall's mother once told her:
"Jane, if you really want to do something, you work hard, you stick to it until there's an opportunity."

开头是in the field of economics吧

IDEALISTIC VIEW
