Issue 144 (考频75)
"It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value."
*a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.

Speaking of artistic works, people would conveniently associate them with the greatest painters, musicians, playwrights, such as Da Vinci, Beethoven, Shakespeare, as well as their masterpieces as hallmarks for those brilliant personalities of different periods of time. However, rarely do people have any idea about some greatest critics in history. I do agree that all the valuable works are created by the artist, but the critic also have contribution on the lasting value.

On one hand, it is undoubted that the artist’s creative minds replete of erratic ideas give birth to the artistic woks. In the history of the development of art, many valuable works that are preserved up to the present are created by famous artists. For example, the “Divine Comedy” written by Dante, “Mona Lisa” painted by Vince. We can definitely say that they are of everlasting value and will certainly be appreciated by people in the future.

On the other hand, without critics, the value of those artistic works can not be distinguished from a huge number of newly born creations. For common persons, who have little professional knowledge to evaluate the artistic works, it is impossible to appreciate the real value lies in a great work. For instance, most of impressionism painting works can not be easily understood with a first glance. Only with the professional explanations can common people know what the real meaning expressed by the works. That’s why when go to an artistic museum it is necessary to follow the guidance. Therefore, only with the evaluation from the critics, can the real valuable works be reserved and the value last for ever.

Furthermore, a criticism could help artist promote their working level and encourage them to create greater works. No one is born to an artist. It is rarely that an artist’s maiden work can turn to be a great work. Every artist needs a progress to improve their creating ability. During this period, criticisms from critics play an important role, which help them realize their shortage and the dissatisfactory points in the work. With endless modification and improvement, a great work and a famous artist finally come out.

In conclusion, it is obvious that the artist and the critic both play important roles of the creation of great works. It is the artist who gives society something of lasting value, and it is the critic that help the artist create the value and distinguish the value.

Issue 131 (15)
"The arts (painting, music, literature, etc.) reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society."

1、艺术作品能够表达人们的观念和态度;
2、艺术作品能够反映人们内心的需求;

Issue 190 (14)
"As long as people in a society are hungry or out of work or lack the basic skills needed to survive, the use of public resources to support the arts is inappropriate—and, perhaps, even cruel—when one considers all the potential uses of such money."

Issue 218 (26)
"In order for any work of art—whether film, literature, sculpture, or a song—to have merit, it must be understandable to most people."

Therefore, only with the evaluation from the critics, can the real valuable works be reserved and the value last for ever.

Furthermore, a criticism could help artist promote their working level and encourage them to create greater works. No one is born to an artist. It is rarely that an artist’s maiden work can turn to be a great work.(这也不竟然啊,很多艺术家处女作最棒,后来越写越烂!) Every artist needs a progress to improve their creating ability.
